Akira Fudo is the main protagonist who transforms into the powerful being known as Devilman. Before his transformation, he is a gentle, sensitive, and empathetic high school student known for his compassionate nature, which often moves him to tears on behalf of others. He lives with the Makimura family, with whom he shares a close bond. His life changes dramatically when his childhood best friend, Ryo Asuka, introduces him to a demonic gathering known as a Sabbath. To gain the power to fight demons, Akira is forced to fuse with the powerful demon lord Amon. Through the sheer force of his pure human heart, Akira manages to subdue Amon's will, retaining his human consciousness while gaining immense demonic powers, thus becoming Devilman. His primary motivation is to protect humanity and the people he loves, particularly Miki Makimura, his childhood friend and love interest. His bond with Ryo is complex and forms the emotional core of his story, as Ryo is both his closest ally and a manipulative figure with a ruthless mentality. As Devilman, Akira possesses superhuman strength, speed, durability, and a powerful healing factor. He has sharp claws and fangs, large bat-like wings that enable flight, a prehensile tail, and can fire an energy beam from the antennae on his head known as the Devil Beam. Despite his monstrous appearance, he uses his terrifying powers to fight other demons and protect a world that often fears him. In his role as a tragic hero, he struggles with the brutality his powers require while retaining his core capacity for love and sorrow. He has also appeared as an uneasy ally to Koji Kabuto, the pilot of Mazinger Z, joining forces against the Demon Tribe and the villainous Dr. Hell.
