Description
Tenkai emerges as a shadowy advisor to Hideaki Kobayakawa, cloaked in mystery and wielding persuasive rhetoric to manipulate events. His hidden past unravels to expose Mitsuhide Akechi, the disgraced Oda general who betrayed Nobunaga at Honnoji. Presumed dead after clashing with Nobunaga, Mitsuhide resurfaces as Tenkai, masking his identity to orchestrate schemes from the shadows.

Under this guise, he allies with Ōtani Yoshitsugu and corrupts Oichi, exploiting her dark magic to resurrect Nobunaga from the afterlife. To fuel the ritual, he engineers chaos across Japan, framing Tokugawa Ieyasu for massacres to fracture alliances. Driven by bitter resentment, Tenkai seeks to reignite his rivalry with Nobunaga, viewing widespread bloodshed as a catalyst for their final confrontation.

His interactions betray intimate knowledge of figures like Tokugawa Ieyasu, who discerns his true identity. Nobunaga mocks him as "still a fool," reflecting their fractured history, while Oichi openly names him Mitsuhide, hinting at her awareness of his deception. Tenkai’s machinations include fabricating evidence to spark the Battle of Sekigahara and weaponizing Oichi’s anguish over Azai Nagamasa’s demise.

Oichi’s eventual rebellion—spurred by her late husband’s spirit—culminates in her self-sacrifice to halt Nobunaga’s return. Though *Sengoku Basara 3 Utage* reveals Hisahide Matsunaga compelled his transformation into Tenkai, his choices reflect a personal quest for vengeance.

In battle, Tenkai wields dual scythes and harnesses darkness, mirroring Mitsuhide’s combat style. His theme music reinterprets Mitsuhide’s original motif, while unlockable costumes in later games restore his pre-Tenkai appearance, visually bridging both identities.

Speculative historical ties to the real-life monk Tenkai are woven into his narrative, merging conjecture with fiction to frame him as a manipulative force shaping the Sengoku era’s turmoil beyond the grave.
