Description
Fujio Katakura, known as Darkninja, is a central antagonist and the arch-rival of the protagonist in the narrative. His civilian identity, Fujio Katakura, was once an archaeology student who came from a poor background and studied to understand the nature of an ancient curse. During his studies, he discovered the cursed katana Beppin, and upon taking the blade, a ninja soul known as Hagane Ninja descended upon him, transforming him into the deadly warrior Darkninja.

Darkninja possesses a cold, taciturn, and almost nihilistic personality. He rarely displays emotion, maintaining a machine-like composure and a ruthless efficiency in all his actions. While he serves his masters with a detached obedience that might appear as loyalty, his hidden pride and fierce fighting spirit drive him from within. He is calculating and pragmatic, willing to eliminate anyone—including former allies or benefactors—if they become an obstacle or a disadvantage to his own goals.

His primary motivation is intrinsically linked to his past and the cursed legacy of Hagane Ninja. The Katakura bloodline was cursed by Hagane Ninja millennia ago, a curse that manifested as a dark mark on the men of the family and a fate that drove them toward madness or ruin. This curse was intended to lead a descendant back to the sword Beppin, allowing Hagane Ninja to resurrect. Discovering this truth, Darkninja rejects the destiny laid out for him. His driving goal shifts from servitude to a fierce desire to break free from his cursed fate. He no longer acts merely as a tool for an organization but as an agent of his own will, seeking to sever the ancient bonds that seek to control him and use any means necessary to survive and achieve his own purpose.

Within the story, Darkninja serves as the ultimate rival and the direct killer of the hero's family. He was a high-ranking operative of the Soukai Syndicate, serving directly under the crime lord Laomoto Khan, a position even above the elite Six Gates unit. In this role, he was ordered to destroy a building, an act that resulted in the deaths of the wife and child of Kenji Fujikido, who would later become the Ninja Slayer. This act makes him the direct catalyst for the hero's entire journey of vengeance.

His key relationships are defined by conflict and manipulation. The most significant is his adversarial bond with Ninja Slayer. They are destined to clash repeatedly, with each battle pushing the other to new extremes of power and understanding. For Darkninja, this rivalry evolves from a simple mission to a matter of personal pride and a mirror through which he views his own strength. Another important relationship is with the mysterious Fate Masters, Tortoise and Crane, who intervene in his life to steer him away from death toward a new destiny in the Kyoto Republic. This intervention leads him to abandon the crumbling Soukai Syndicate and join the rival Zaibatsu Shadow Guild, where he uses his deep knowledge of ancient ninja protocols to rise through the ranks and build his own faction, all while being distrusted as an outsider.

Darkninja undergoes a significant transformation throughout the narrative. He begins as Laomoto Khan’s trusted and deadly right hand, a ruthless killer serving the Soukaiya. After a near-fatal defeat by Ninja Slayer, he falls into a coma, and upon awakening, the course of his existence is altered by the Fate Masters, who guide him to leave his old master behind. He journeys to Kyoto, joins the Zaibatsu, and begins to act on his own ambitions, eventually turning against the Grand Lord of Zaibatsu in a successful coup. This act of rebellion sees him absorb the power from his sword Beppin, undergoing a Harikiri Descent that transforms his appearance, discarding his heavy armor for a dark robe that becomes an extension of his karate power. By the end, he has become a new Lord of Zaibatsu, ruling from the floating ruins of Kyoto Castle and preparing for a larger conflict, now acting as a master of his own destiny rather than a servant of another's.

Darkninja possesses a suite of notable abilities that distinguish him as a top-tier fighter. He does not rely on mystical jitsu techniques but on overwhelming karate physical combat prowess and mastery of the blade. His primary weapon is the demonic katana Beppin, a weapon forged from the bone of the evil demigod Katsujunso, which allows it to harm him. The sword can also absorb the souls of ninja he kills to increase its own power. He is a master of iaido, the art of drawing the sword to strike instantly, and his signature move is the Death Slash, a technique so fast that even other ninja cannot perceive the blade and are cut down in a single, flawless stroke. Another deadly ability is the Yami-Uchi (Dark Stab), where he plunges Beppin into a ninja's heart to absorb their soul and memories. He also possesses deep knowledge of ancient ninja history, able to read archaic texts and understand forgotten customs, which aids him in navigating the complex politics of the ninja world. Later, he gains the ability to manifest a Dark Robe, which uses his karate energy to generate repulsive force fields, allowing him to perform three-dimensional maneuvers in mid-air and deflect attacks.
