Description
In the world of "07-Ghost," the story unfolds in a fictional empire where the Barsburg Church holds significant religious and political power. The narrative centers on Teito Klein, a former slave turned elite military academy student, who possesses mysterious powers tied to his forgotten past. After discovering a connection between his origins and the church, Teito becomes a target of the empire. During a mission, he uncovers a shocking truth about his father’s death and the empire’s dark secrets, leading to his imprisonment and eventual escape.

Teito is aided by Mikage, his loyal friend, and later by the clergy of the Barsburg Church, particularly the Seven Ghosts—legendary warriors who serve as protectors of the world. The Seven Ghosts include figures like Frau, a flamboyant and enigmatic bishop with a tragic past, and Castor, a stoic and skilled fighter. As Teito seeks refuge within the church, he learns about the existence of the Zaiphon, a spiritual energy used in combat, and the Eye of Mikhail, a powerful artifact tied to his destiny.

The plot delves into themes of reincarnation, divine intervention, and the struggle between good and evil. Teito’s journey intertwines with the history of the world, revealing his role as the reincarnation of Verloren, a fallen god of death. The Barsburg Empire seeks to harness Verloren’s power, while the Seven Ghosts aim to prevent the resurrection of this malevolent force. Teito must confront his own identity, reconcile his past, and decide whether to embrace or reject his connection to Verloren.

The story explores the relationships between Teito and his allies, particularly his bond with Frau, who becomes a mentor and protector. The narrative also introduces Ayanami, a high-ranking officer in the Barsburg military with a personal vendetta against Teito, and Labrador, a kind-hearted bishop who plays a crucial role in guiding Teito’s spiritual growth. As the conflict escalates, Teito and his companions face battles against powerful adversaries, uncover long-buried truths, and grapple with the moral complexities of their world.

"07-Ghost" blends action, fantasy, and drama, with a focus on character development and intricate world-building. The series balances intense combat sequences with moments of introspection, exploring themes of redemption, loyalty, and the search for identity. The interplay between the Barsburg Empire, the church, and the supernatural forces driving the conflict creates a layered and engaging narrative.

1The Future of Painful Thoughts is
The episode opens in the Barsburg Military Academy, where Teito Klein, a student and former slave, endures routine bullying from peers due to his origins. He and his best friend, Mikage, prepare for the rigorous Begleiter Exam, a practical test that requires candidates to kill a Troll in order to graduate and become military aides. Both Teito and Mikage successfully pass this difficult examination, demonstrating their competence with Zaiphon, a supernatural power taught at the academy. While returning documents to an examiner afterward, Teito overhears a conversation involving Chief of Staff Ayanami, a name that triggers a fragmented memory of his father's murder. Confronted by this repressed trauma, Teito impulsively attempts to assassinate Ayanami but is swiftly subdued by a subordinate and imprisoned to await interrogation. Mikage learns of Teito's capture and goes to his cell, intending to rescue him; however, he discovers that Teito has already overpowered the guards. The pair flee through the academy but are cornered on a veranda. To prevent Mikage from being implicated as an accomplice, Teito stages a hostage situation and escapes alone on a flying vehicle. Ayanami intercepts the escape, striking Teito with a powerful surge of Zaiphon. The injured Teito plummets toward the ground, his fate unresolved as the episode concludes, leaving the immediate consequence of his flight and the safety of Mikage uncertain.
2Nostalgic Memories Accompany Pain
Teito Klein, unconscious after Ayanami's zaiphon attack in the previous episode, plummets from the sky and collides with Bishop Frau, who is riding a hawkzile through the canyons near District 7. Frau and the other bishops, Castor and Labrador, transport the injured Teito to the Barsburg Church, which is located within District 7. Upon waking, Teito panics and attempts to flee through a window, but Frau prevents his escape. The three bishops introduce themselves and explain that Teito is in a place of sanctuary; the military is prohibited from entering District 7, known as the 'zone of God,' to retrieve fugitives. They observe the slave brand on his back and the handcuffs on his wrists, but they do not force him to reveal his name or his past. Meanwhile, at Hohburg Fortress, Mikage is interrogated by Ayanami for aiding Teito's escape; Ayanami presents him with an ultimatum: choose between protecting his family or protecting Teito. At the Church, Teito witnesses the sisters, Athena, Libelle, and Rosalie, caring for the sick and injured, including a child brought in with a mark from a Kor, a malevolent entity that preys on human desires. Bishop Castor successfully removes the curse from the child, and bystanders mention that the Church is protected by the legendary Seven Ghosts. Seeking answers about his own connection to the fallen Raggs Kingdom, Teito ventures into the Church library. There, he discovers that Bishop Frau has been using the library to hide pornographic materials, and Bishop Castor operates a collection of life-sized dolls. Castor provides Teito with the official historical account of the Raggs War, prompting Teito to resolve to uncover the truth about his origins and his father, the king of Raggs. The episode concludes with both Teito and Mikage facing crucial decisions about loyalty and survival that will shape their immediate futures.
3My Innocent Child, Sleep Within the Light
Teito's internal conflict intensifies as he grapples with guilt over leaving Mikage behind, motivating his decision to leave the sanctuary of the Church and travel to Hohburg Fortress. His initial escape attempt is thwarted by Frau, who physically brings him to the dining hall, where Teito is confronted with the Church's simple fare of eyefish stew. The nuns kindly inquire about his name, but Teito's hesitation is met with understanding, reinforcing the Church's non-judgmental atmosphere. Later, Teito encounters an enigmatic old man in the courtyard who claims he can grant Teito's wish if he returns at midnight, planting a seed of temptation. That night, as Teito prepares to flee, Frau intercepts him and asserts that Teito lacks the strength for his mission, provoking Teito into a Zaiphon battle. During the confrontation, Frau effortlessly overpowers Teito, and in the heat of the fight, Teito finally reveals his name, confirming Castor's suspicion that he is a former Military Academy student. After losing consciousness, Teito awakens and, despite the defeat, chooses to heed the old man's summons when the midnight bell tolls, heading to the courtyard. Frau, sensing danger, follows him, setting the stage for a supernatural encounter. Concurrently, back at the fortress, Mikage endures interrogation by Hyuuga and Ayanami, who pressure him to choose between saving Teito or protecting his sister, leaving his loyalties severely strained.
4To the Depths of the Earnest Prayer
Teito Klein encounters an old man within the church grounds who offers to grant his deepest wish to see his friend Mikage. The old man places a mysterious symbol on Teito's chest, triggering a vision of Mikage that nearly ensnares him. A flower previously given to Teito by Bishop Labrador activates, breaking the spell and alerting the bishops to the danger. Bishop Frau attacks the old man, revealing him to be a Kor, a malevolent entity that preys on human desires by granting wishes in exchange for possessing the individual's soul. Frau unleashes a large scythe from his arm, a weapon Teito is shocked to discover he can see. Castor joins the effort, and together the two bishops manage to exorcise the Kor, freeing the old man's soul from its grip. Frau subsequently removes the residual mark of the Kor from Teito's chest. Castor explains to Teito the nature of Kors, describing them as creatures that manipulate human desires, leading their hosts down a path of darkness where they are never satisfied with their granted wishes. The following day, Teito is introduced to Razette, the Noel mermaid who serves as the church's organist, and the two begin to form a friendship. Castor instructs Teito to keep the incident with the Kor a secret from others in the church. Concurrently at Hohburg Fortress, Mikage, still under interrogation by Chief of Staff Ayanami, makes his final decision to remain loyal to Teito rather than betray him. In response to Mikage's choice, Ayanami unleashes a powerful surge of Zaiphon energy directly at him.
5Hot Tears, Gently Fill His Heart
Following his traumatic encounter with the Kor, Teito remains in a state of distress at the Barsburg church, prompting the bishops Frau, Castor, and Labrador to speculate about the nature of the wish he made. At Hohburg Fortress, Chief of Staff Ayanami convenes a meeting with his Black Hawks unit, during which he asserts that Teito's recapture is imminent. Within the church, Teito is moved by the kindness shown by the sisters and Razette, which leads him to question why he is being treated with such compassion. Acting on Razette's suggestion, Teito attends mass, where he experiences a critical vision that reveals his true identity as the heir to the fallen Raggs Kingdom and the wielder of the Eye of Mikhail. This revelation compels him to consider leaving the church to protect its inhabitants from the danger his presence invites. As he approaches the church gate, he is astonished to find his friend Mikage walking toward him. Mikage, having survived Ayanami's assault, chooses to stay at the church with Teito. During a conversation in the garden, the pair is suddenly attacked by a Kor sent by Ayanami. Teito engages the creature but finds himself unable to inflict any harm upon it. Frau intervenes, using his abilities to exorcise the Kor and liberate the human soul trapped within. Later that night, Teito confides in Mikage, revealing the full truth about his lineage and connection to the Eye of Mikhail, setting the stage for the challenges to come.
6Hikari ni Tsūzuru Tadashiki Michi wa
The annual bazaar at the Barsburg Church serves as the setting for the episode, allowing Teito and Mikage to interact with the bishops in a more casual environment. Labrador operates a candy flower shop, Castor sells clothes originally made for his dolls, and Frau runs a meat stand, despite such fare being typically forbidden within the church. Teito samples Frau's meat product but finds it unappealing after learning of its mysterious origin. Throughout these festivities, Teito senses that Mikage is concealing something from him, creating an undercurrent of tension beneath the surface-level calm. Meanwhile, the Black Hawks receive orders from their superiors to infiltrate District 7, which is known to harbor runaway battle sklaves, indicating the military's continued pursuit of Teito. The conflict escalates when a carriage crashes at the church entrance and Mikage moves to assist a young girl who bears the Kor marking. The girl suddenly transforms into a Kor and attacks Mikage, placing him in mortal danger. Teito rushes to defend his friend, but the Kor gains the upper hand and captures Mikage. As the Kor prepares to deliver a fatal blow, the Eye of Mikhail within Teito activates involuntarily, emitting a blinding light that incapacitates the creature. Frau arrives on the scene and destroys the Kor while Teito loses consciousness from the strain of the power's manifestation. Upon regaining consciousness, Teito and Mikage have a private conversation about trust and secrets, though Mikage remains evasive about his internal struggles. The three bishops observe the exchange from a distance, their expressions suggesting concern over the implications of the Eye's awakening and Mikage's hidden burden.
7翼に喰われた魂は愛しい我子の夢を見る?
During the church's annual bazaar, Mikage grapples with the ultimatum presented by Ayanami, which forces a choice between his sister's safety and his loyalty to Teito. While walking the grounds, Mikage notices a young boy secretly observing him from behind a tree. The boy, named Tajio, is later caught stealing bread and explains to Teito and Mikage that his mother is deceased and his father is away working. The sisters perform a play for the church visitors, but Tajio, believing the performance to be real, interrupts when a character brandishes a knife at the goddess Athena, attempting to rescue her. Tajio's father arrives at the church to collect his son. As the father approaches, he is revealed to be a Kor, and he attacks those present. Teito's Eye of Mikhail begins to activate in response to the threat, but the power subsides before fully manifesting. Bishop Frau arrives on the scene and engages the Kor, successfully defeating the creature and freeing the father from its possession. Following Frau's intervention, the situation is resolved peacefully, and Tajio departs for home with his now-liberated father. The episode explores Mikage's internal conflict regarding Ayanami's demand while also presenting a standalone incident involving a Kor that highlights the bishops' role in protecting both the church and the innocent.
8Half of His Soul Arouses a Sad Awakening
The episode begins with a tense calm as Labrador's prediction of an impending storm hangs over the church. Teito notices that Mikage's hands are unnaturally cold, signaling that something is wrong. Mikage suddenly feels a presence awakening within himself and, in his final moments of clarity, begs Teito to kill him. As his last words, Mikage expresses his love for Teito and states that Teito has always been as important to him as his own family. Ayanami then takes possession of Mikage's body, manifesting a single Kor wing. A confrontation ensues between Teito and the possessed Mikage, during which Teito is injured but manages to escape with the assistance of one of Castor's dolls. Back at the main church, Castor senses that his doll has lost its signal, and Frau detects the presence of a half-Kor entering the premises, prompting him to search for Teito. Teito is eventually found by Ayanami, who places a restraining promise collar around Teito's neck. In a desperate attempt to save Mikage, Teito tries to take his own life but only succeeds in falling unconscious. At this moment, a guardian entity awakens within Teito. A flash of light occurs, and Teito's eyes open to reveal blood-red irises. Speaking with a different voice, the entity within Teito asks Ayanami, "Who are you to hurt my master?". The episode concludes with Ayanami looking down in surprise at this unexpected transformation.
9The Color of His Soul Will Be Forever...
The episode opens with the battle between Teito, now possessed by the awakened Eye of Mikhail, and Mikage, who remains under Ayanami's control. Teito's uncontrolled Zaiphon blasts cause extensive damage to the room until Ayanami restrains him with binding threads. Frau arrives and is identified by Ayanami as Zehel, one of the Seven Ghosts. Frau severs the threads holding Teito and confronts Ayanami, but a moment of opportunity arises when his scythe nears Mikage. Ayanami seizes this moment to deflect the scythe, shearing off a portion of the Kor wing attached to Mikage. With the wing damaged, Ayanami releases his control, and Mikage's form begins to disintegrate into feathers before vanishing entirely. Frau transports the distraught Teito back to his dormitory at the church. A series of flashbacks depicts the origins of Teito and Mikage's friendship, showing Mikage's persistent efforts to befriend the isolated Teito, his concern over Teito's eating habits, and his lighthearted obsession with yakisoba bread. Upon returning to the present, Frau attempts to comfort Teito by explaining that Mikage fulfilled his wish to protect him and has been reincarnated. A small, pink, dragon-like creature that can only say "Burupya" appears and crawls towards Teito, revealed to be Mikage's reincarnated form, now able to stay by his side. The creature startles Frau as he tries to use giant scissors on Teito's collar, resulting in the bishop being bitten. The episode concludes with Frau accidentally forming a pact with Teito, making him Teito's new master in the process of attempting to remove the collar.
10That Is But One Form of Atonement
The episode opens with the funeral of Mikage, where Teito and the bishops are in attendance. Grief-stricken, Teito resolves to leave the church to avenge Mikage by killing Ayanami, believing he is a burden to those around him. Concurrently, at Hohburg Fortress, Ayanami informs Miroku that Teito, now possessing the Eye of Mikhail, must be eliminated, though Miroku dismisses the order and instructs him to keep the matter secret. As Teito attempts to depart, he encounters Castor, who questions him about seeing the shinigami Zehel. When Teito reveals he knows that Frau is Zehel, Castor uses his Zaiphon to put Teito to sleep, intending to erase his memory to protect the secret of the Seven Ghosts. Frau intervenes, arguing that erasing those memories would also make Teito forget Mikage's final smile. During their confrontation, Frau's scythe goes out of control and moves to attack the unconscious Teito. Teito suddenly awakens not as himself, but as the god Mikhail, who possesses tremendous power. Mikhail uses illusions to threaten Castor and Frau, but realizing they are two of the Seven Ghosts, he notes that ordinary humans would have perished or fainted from his attack. Castor informs Frau that the collar on Teito's neck has three commands: Bind, Sleep, and Pain. Frau successfully activates the Sleep command, forcing Mikhail to relent and allowing Teito to regain consciousness. Following the incident, Teito is taken to a location within the church where he discovers Mikage's final words carved for him: a message expressing their eternal friendship and a plea for Teito to live on. Frau explains that enduring the pain and continuing to live is Teito's form of atonement for Mikage's sacrifice.
11愛しき者への償いは…
Teito remains at the church, grappling with how to atone for Mikage's death following the events of the previous episode. Castor proposes that Teito take the Bishop's Apprentice Exam, framing it as a path that could aid in his quest for revenge, a suggestion to which Teito agrees. Castor outlines that the examination consists of two parts, with a written test as the first hurdle. Although the volume of material initially seems overwhelming, Teito discovers he has already read all the required books, removing that obstacle. The second phase of the exam evaluates a candidate's proficiency with Zaiphon techniques. During his training, Teito struggles to use a Baculus, prompting Castor to introduce a training doll modeled after Frau, which moves at high speed. Despite concentrated effort, Teito is unable to capture the doll, revealing a gap in his practical skills. Following a conversation with Labrador, Teito decides to pursue knowledge and uncover the truth about the world. While walking through the church halls, Teito catches a glimpse of someone who resembles Mikage. The figure is identified as Hakuren Oak, another examinee. Hakuren notices the exam badge on Teito's collar and, showing his own, declares Teito his rival, establishing a new dynamic as the episode concludes.
12The Darkness Called "Pain" Treads Ever Closer...
The episode opens with a scene of a man in the street making a deal with a fortune teller, who grants him three wishes in exchange for his soul. Parallel to this, Teito and Hakuren encounter each other at the church and engage in a heated argument, establishing their immediate mutual animosity. As Teito chases after his companion Mikage, who has perched on Hakuren's head, he witnesses Assistant Archbishop Bastian performing a Kor exorcism with a Basculus, demonstrating the weapon's use without harming the human vessel. The man from the opening scene, now transformed into a Wars, is subsequently confronted and destroyed by Frau. Following this, Teito is moved from the guest quarters to the Bishop Candidate dorms, where he learns his new roommate is Hakuren Oak, much to the displeasure of both boys. Encouraged by the bishops Castor and Labrador, Teito and Hakuren proceed to the training hall to practice with their Basculi for the upcoming exam. Upon arrival, the hall's receptionist, Aldo, suddenly collapses, prompting the two candidates to escort him to the infirmary, which causes them to be late for their practice session. In the training hall, a barrier containing numerous Kor is present, and Hakuren demonstrates his proficiency with his Basculus. Teito initially struggles with the technique but, after focusing on his desire to protect others, inadvertently unleashes a massive surge of zaiphon that destroys both the borrowed Basculus he was using and the training hall's barrier. The episode concludes with a mysterious figure murdering the receptionist, Aldo.
13Down the Path of Light I See...
The episode opens with the discovery of the murderer Aldo's body outside the church gates, leading to speculation that the Seven Ghosts are responsible for his death. Teito, having regained fragmented memories the previous night, visits the library to seek more information about his past, where he is joined by Hakuren and Frau. A lighthearted moment occurs when Hakuren unknowingly gives Frau a book containing pornographic material, leading to a shared bond between them until Assistant Archbishop Bastien confiscates it. Teito inquires whether the Ghosts would truly kill someone, but Frau remains silent on the matter, and Bastien offers only the vague response that God punishes people. Seeking to return Frau's broken Baculus, Teito inadvertently overhears a private conversation between Frau and Castor discussing him, which deeply upsets him and causes him to flee. When Frau confronts him, Teito openly accuses Frau and the church of coveting the power of the Eye of Mikhail. Frau responds by stating that the decision to trust them is Teito's alone and warns that he will not always be able to protect him. The situation escalates when Frau carelessly mentions the name Fea Kreuz, triggering panic and suspicion in Teito, who demands to know how Frau is connected to that name, though Frau evades the question. Elsewhere in the church, Castor senses an ominous presence, and it is revealed that the antagonist Kuroyuri has successfully infiltrated the church's premises. The episode establishes a growing rift between Teito and his protectors while simultaneously introducing a direct threat within the sanctuary.
14A Reason to Fight Together... The Right to be Called Brothers in Arms
Following the attack on Castor, the bishops confer about the mysterious figure who challenged him, acknowledging the presence of a formidable enemy within the church grounds. Castor continues Teito's specialized training at night, utilizing a series of "Frau" dolls to hone Teito's defensive skills against spiritual pressure. After one session, Teito's roommate Hakuren notices the sklave tattoo on Teito's lower back, which prompts Hakuren to reveal his own past. Hakuren explains that his mother was once consumed by a Kor and was saved by Bishop Frau, which is his motivation for wishing to become a bishop himself. Castor upgrades Teito's training equipment by providing him with a professional-grade Baculus, and Teito successfully demonstrates his increased power by sending multiple Frau dolls flying. During their return to their quarters, Teito and Hakuren are ambushed by a Wars, a shadowy monster that manifests from a corrupted soul. Frau intervenes and destroys the creature, revealing that the Wars was once a man named Aldo, who was under the control of a Kor. After they recover in Frau's room, Teito confronts Hakuren about risking his life during the attack, driven by a fear of losing another friend after Mikage's death. This emotional conflict leads Teito to declare his intention to become strong enough to protect Hakuren and to ask for his friendship. The episode concludes with Frau reflecting privately on Labrador's prophecy and the mysterious changes occurring within his own scythe.
15That Day, I Was Certainly With Him
Teito dedicates himself fully to studying for the Bishop's Exam at the Church's library, where a brief comedic moment occurs as he struggles to reach a high shelf. While in the library, he is approached by an unknown bishop who presents him with a Clergy Pass and a message from a man named Fea Kreuz, a name that triggers a significant emotional memory for Teito. Before the imposter can say more, Castor attacks him with his Zaiphon, but the assailant, later revealed to be the Black Hawk Haruse in disguise, vanishes in a puff of black smoke. Haruse's parting words sow seeds of doubt by claiming the Church is not on Teito's side and directing him to ask a "foolish bishop" about the matter. This confrontation forces Teito to directly question Bishop Labrador, Castor, and Frau about their trustworthiness, to which they respond that the decision to believe them is ultimately his own. Concurrently, Frau senses an evil presence and is lured into a trap by Kuroyuri, who uses a Wars to force mutilated prisoners to attack him. Frau defends himself with his scythe, but Kuroyuri disappears just as the Imperial Guard arrive, leading to Frau's arrest for possessing a Warsfeil weapon and on suspicion of murder. Meanwhile, at Hohburg Fortress, Ayanami agrees to be transferred to Antwort while maintaining telepathic contact with his subordinates, coordinating their efforts against the Church. The episode reaches its turning point when, after learning from Castor that Fea Kreuz was excommunicated from the Church long ago, Teito resolves to place his faith in the bishops who have protected him.
16The Truth lies Deep within the Darkness Where Light Cannot Reach
Castor provides Teito with information regarding his father, Fea Kreuz, explaining that Kreuz was excommunicated for stealing Pandora's Box from the Church, an act that is cited as a catalyst for the Raggs War. Despite this revelation, Teito maintains his conviction that Kreuz was not a malicious figure. Labrador subsequently delivers the news that Frau has been sentenced to death for his alleged crimes. Motivated to act, Teito searches for the Light Dungeon where Frau is being held, receiving guidance from Razette to reach the underwater prison. Upon locating Frau's cell, Teito attempts to break him out, but Frau refuses to escape, stating that he must face the consequences himself as fleeing would be an admission of guilt. Frau asks Teito to smile for him to ease his worries, prompting Teito to recall memories of Mikage teaching him how to smile. Teito manages to produce an awkward smile before departing from the prison. Upon surfacing, Teito is met by Hakuren, who offers him a towel. That evening, Teito and Hakuren decide to investigate the tower where Frau was arrested, aiming to uncover evidence that will prove his innocence. Concurrently, a conversation between Bastien and Archbishop Jio raises the possibility of a traitor operating from within the Church.
17The Family With Wings of Darkness, Enshrouded in Misery, Flies Down
Teito and Hakuren investigate the scene where Frau allegedly murdered criminals, aiming to uncover evidence that would prove his innocence. They leave their Baculus at the entrance, a detail that later becomes significant. Archbishop Bastien joins them, offering no new clues about the crime but instead providing an account of Frau's difficult childhood and his path to becoming a bishop. After Bastien departs to visit Frau in his cell, Hakuren notices that their Baculus have become tainted, a phenomenon that only occurs when a Warsfeil has touched them. This observation leads the boys to deduce that Bastien himself is a Warsfeil, contradicting his ecclesiastical position. They rush to intercept him, successfully evading the Imperial Guard to enter Bastien's quarters. There, they discover a concealed passage behind a bookcase, which they follow to its end. Bastien confronts them in this hidden corridor and immediately attacks Teito using a Wars. He declares that Teito is to be executed for treason against the Barsburg Empire, transforming the investigation into a direct physical conflict. The episode pivots from a search for evidence to a revelation of a concealed enemy within the church's hierarchy.
18赦さざる者闇に溺れ… 愛する者は涙に濡れる
Bastien reveals his identity as a spy for Ayanami's intelligence division, having infiltrated the Church for an extended period. He takes Hakuren hostage, demanding Teito surrender himself, and Teito allows Bastien's Wars to attack him rather than see Hakuren harmed. Teito is subsequently imprisoned within a sphere containing numerous Wars, leading to an internal struggle as the Eye of Mikhail vies for control and some Wars enter his body. Concurrently, within the Church, Labrador's troubling predictions prompt him and Castor to confront an intruder. The intruders are Kuroyuri and Haruse from the Black Hawks, who have infiltrated disguised as clergy to reach Frau's cell. Haruse leaves to investigate a disturbance and is met by Labrador, while Kuroyuri proceeds to find a cell containing not Frau but one of Castor's meticulously crafted dolls. Castor then confronts Kuroyuri, using his abilities to delve into the intruder's soul and establish direct contact with Ayanami himself. In the other confrontation, Zehel, one of the Seven Ghosts, emerges and kills Bastien, saving Teito and Hakuren. Bastien's motivations stem from an inability to accept that sinners are forgiven through God's love while innocent people die; his adherence to this conviction left his soul corrupted by the Wars. Despite his betrayal, his final moments with Frau reveal the genuine bond they once shared, and his last wish is for Frau to follow his own path. The episode concludes with the immediate consequences of these dual conflicts: a spy is eliminated by a Ghost, and the Chief Bishop's soul is directly assaulted by Ayanami.
19The One-Sided, Yet Never Dying Love Finds Itself...
Castor utilizes Kuroyuri to establish direct communication with Ayanami, confronting him in his capacity as Fest, one of the Seven Ghosts. During their exchange, an explosion separates the combatants; Haruse captures Kuroyuri, while Labrador secures Castor, after which both Kuroyuri and Haruse vanish from the immediate area. Concurrently, preparations for the church's examination continue among the participants, and the broader conflict between the imperial soldiers and the church's protectors persists. Archbishop Bastien receives a formal funeral, a measure taken to conceal the true circumstances of his death and to maintain the appearance of normalcy within the church. Elsewhere, Hakuren experiences a direct and personal encounter with the Eye of Mikhail while watching over the unconscious Teito. Upon regaining consciousness, the darkness residing within Teito's heart acts as a catalyst, awakening the fragment of darkness that had previously escaped into the Eye of Mikhail. As this malevolent force begins to engulf them, Hakuren makes a desperate attempt to hold onto Teito, but both are consumed by the encroaching darkness before Frau can intervene. The episode portrays the immediate aftermath of Bastien's death and escalates the internal threat posed by Teito's own nature, directly endangering Hakuren and setting the stage for the next confrontation.
20They Both Offer A Requiem
Following their capture by Ayanami's forces, Teito and Hakuren manage to leap from the military Hawkzile with Frau's timely assistance. The episode focuses on the ensuing battle, during which the Eye of Mikhail takes autonomous action to protect Teito. The artifact separates itself from Teito, absorbing the Wars energy directed at him, and unleashes its full power by raining fire upon the enemy airships. Frau makes the critical decision to prioritize saving the unconscious Teito over attempting to retrieve the Eye, allowing it to fall into enemy hands. Teito awakens disheartened by the loss of the Eye, but Frau offers consolation to lift his spirits. Elsewhere, Bishop Labrador presents Frau with a plant, revealing that the late Bishop Bastien, having succumbed to darkness, was not reincarnated as a human but reborn as an Evie tree. Frau plants the tree in the church garden, ensuring Bastien's lasting presence among them. Teito comes to acknowledge Hakuren as a friend and proceeds to prepare for the upcoming bishop examination. As they head to the exam, Teito inadvertently steps on and breaks a key token dropped by Bishop Lance, who is revealed to be their head examiner. This incident sets an immediate, unfortunate precedent for Teito's participation in the trials to come.
21Therefore, You Pass Through the Door of the Defeated
Following the activation of the Eye of Mikhail, the Barsburg military high command convenes at Hohburg Fortress. Despite demands for Ayanami's execution after the loss of two fleet ships, Field Marshal Wakaba Oak redirects their focus to the emergence of the Eye's master. The military decides to locate Teito Klein and eliminate him to prevent the revival of the Raggs Kingdom, while concealing the incident as a malfunction of the Eye of Raphael. Concurrently, at the Church, the Bishop's Apprentice Exam commences. Teito discovers his Zaiphon energy has been depleted following the departure of the Eye of Mikhail from within him, leaving him unable to use his powers. Fellow aspirant Ouida provides Teito with some of his own Zaiphon energy, enabling him to participate. The first phase of the exam requires candidates to pass through a chamber that exploits personal fears to immobilize them. Teito resolves his inner conflict and successfully exits among the first group. Subsequent trials test their knowledge and agility, culminating in a final challenge featuring two doors: one for the Victor and one for the Defeated, with instructions that only one aspirant may pass through the victor's door. Teito and Hakuren refuse to compete against each other. Instead of designating a winner and loser, they both write "Damn You!" on the wall and run through the door of the Defeated together. When questioned by a disembodied voice, Hakuren states that no one was defeated and no one won, while Teito explains he is simply there for his friend. Bishop Lance appears and informs them that their selfless, cooperative decision has allowed them to pass the test.
22Led By The Light In The Water's Depth, He Spies Upon...
After successfully completing the initial phase of the exam, Teito and Hakuren observe the remaining participants alongside examiner Lance. They witness Wade and Kyle's failure at the final hurdle, caused by Wade's self-interest, while Liam and Ouida successfully pass through the Door of the Defeated. The elderly men Teito and Hakuren previously assisted are revealed to be Former Assistant Archbishops, who accompanied the group to evaluate the examinees' progress. Concurrently, Labrador senses an encroaching dark presence as the military advances toward the church. Following the Former Assistant Archbishops' suggestion, Teito and Hakuren seek out Razette, the noel mermaid, who guides them to an inner sanctuary. Within this sacred space, Teito encounters visions of both his biological father, the King of Raggs, and the priest who raised him. He receives a directive to never forget his true identity as the Prince of the Raggs Kingdom, a revelation that reinforces his personal stakes. Upon their return to the courtyard, they find Bishop Lance awaiting them to commence the second portion of the examination. This next challenge requires participants to confront their inner demons within a designated room and exit through the opposite door to pass. Hakuren begins his trial by facing a colossal manifestation of Wars, while Teito is confronted by the physical presence of his primary antagonist, Ayanami.
23Before the Darkness of the Heart
The second phase of the bishops' exam resumes, confronting the remaining trainees with the physical manifestation of their deepest personal fears. For Teito, this takes the form of his nemesis, Ayanami, while Hakuren is forced to witness a cloaked figure standing over his estranged, injured father. Teito's initial reaction is to charge at the illusion of Ayanami, but the vision shifts to show him the pain he has caused Mikage's family, leading him to spiral into self-blame for his friend's death. Hakuren's trial similarly forces him to relive his father's rejection and hear the figure tempt him to finish his father's life. Meanwhile, fellow trainee Oudia confronts illusions of relatives who stole his family's fortune, and he ultimately overcomes this by recognizing that their greed only strengthened his bond with his brother. As Teito remains paralyzed by guilt, the illusory Ayanami impales him with a sword, and his condition causes concern among the examiners. Hakuren passes his test by choosing to save his father and offer forgiveness, realizing that the masked figure was a projection of his own hatred. Teito's turning point comes when he understands that his true enemy is not Ayanami but the part of himself consumed by guilt over Mikage's death. With this realization, he resolves to leave the examination and successfully passes the trial. However, as he opens the door to exit, he finds himself not in the church hallway but in a dark, unfamiliar corridor, where the real Ayanami emerges from the shadows to confront him. Simultaneously, the Imperial army launches an invasion of the church, creating a dire external threat.
24The Justice of Those Who Lack Love Is... Oh Heart That Is Stolen By Darkness, Forever...
Ayanami confronts Teito within the examination space, mocking his continued reliance on the Eye of Mikhail despite its current absence. Using his Zaiphon, Ayanami transports them both to a location described as the center of the earth, where Teito's attacks prove ineffective against the chief of staff. Ayanami attempts to forcibly access Teito's memories to locate Pandora's Box, but his progress is halted by the spiritual presence of Fea Kreuz (Vertrag), who defends Teito's mind. This intervention causes Ayanami's arm to be torn off, though it quickly regenerates, and leads Teito to recognize that Father was one of the Seven Ghosts. Simultaneously, imperial forces launch an assault on the Barsburg Church. Hakuren informs Frau that troops have stormed the sanctuary, and they are immediately confronted by Kuroyuri, who expresses a desire to kill Labrador for taking Haruse's soul but has been ordered to target Frau instead. Bishop Lance engages Katsuragi in combat, while Hyuuga and Konatsu attack Castor and Labrador, gaining the upper hand against the bishops. Frau defends himself against Kuroyuri's dark energy attacks, using his scythe to cut through the darkness, though Kuroyuri continues to destabilize from the same affliction that consumed Haruse. Frau ultimately pushes Kuroyuri back with an attack invoking light and love, causing the black flowers Kuroyuri held to disintegrate. Ayanami, growing impatient with Teito's resistance, issues an ultimatum: Teito must search his memories for Pandora's Box's location, or the hostages within the church will be killed one by one until he complies. Mikage is struck by a stray attack during the confrontation, and Teito catches him, prompting a realization about what he is fighting to protect.
25The Heart Is Lead By The Truth On The Other Side...
Teito activates the Eye of Mikhail, summoning Frau, Castor, Labrador, Lance, and the Black Hawks into a spiritual realm dominated by colossal representations of the Seven Ghosts. Within this space, Ayanami and his forces engage the bishops in combat. The conflict reaches a stalemate until Ayanami severs the bonds holding them, at which point Kuroyuri summons a portal, allowing Ayanami and the Black Hawks to withdraw from the battlefield. Following their departure, Frau and the other bishops also vanish, leaving Teito alone in the void with the spirit of Mikage. Mikage appears in his human form, and the two share a conversation where they discuss Teito's future and say their farewells before Teito exits the realm. Upon emerging from the Bridge of Trials, Teito is met by Frau, Labrador, and Castor, who inform him that he has successfully passed the examination and is now an apprentice bishop under Frau's mentorship. Labrador reveals the existence of a secret emergency passage designed for the Pope, which Teito and Frau must use to escape. As they navigate the tunnel on a Hawkzile guided by Labrador's magical flowers, Teito briefly encounters Hakuren, exchanging parting words before continuing. The episode concludes with Teito and Frau emerging from the passage, having escaped the immediate pursuit, as Teito verbally commits to his new path forward.
