TV-Series
Description
Frau is a main character from the series who serves as a Bishop at the Barsburg Church in District 7, where his duties include protecting citizens by removing malevolent spiritual entities known as Kor. He is also one of the Seven Ghosts, a group of powerful beings who guard the Church, known specifically as Zehel, the Ghost who severs a person's bonds with misfortune. Physically, Frau is a tall and muscular young man with a very intimidating build, standing at approximately 198 centimeters. He has an angular, long face with narrowed deep blue eyes, pale skin, and light blonde hair that is long but always styled in a spiked-up fashion. He often wears a long, open leather trench coat over his bare chest, paired with a crucifix necklace, and as a Bishop, he dons formal cassocks and a mitre with a veil. As a Ghost in his true form, he appears as a skeleton.

Frau is characterized by a rebellious, hot-tempered, and blunt personality, often appearing rude and unwilling to follow rules. He is known for his perverted nature and can often be found flirting with women or reading pornographic magazines, which has earned him a reputation as the perverted Bishop. Despite this rough and intimidating exterior, he possesses a heart of gold and is incredibly gentle and caring, especially towards children and the weak. He is a staunch defender of underdogs and loathes genuinely cruel people. Despite being a man of faith, he seems to have less faith in God than his peers, once stating that his god is dead, yet he remains dedicated to his protective duties.

Motivation for his actions often stems from a deep-seated desire to protect those he cares about, particularly his young charge, Teito Klein. He is fiercely protective of his friends and will fight ruthlessly to defend them from enemies. While he typically hides his emotions behind a mask of apathy or teasing, he is a deeply haunted individual who describes himself as being surrounded by darkness and already dead. He struggles with a sense of being corrupted by the very power he wields.

In the story, Frau plays a crucial role as Teito's protector, mentor, and accidental master. After Teito falls from his flying vehicle, Frau rescues him and brings him to the Church. When he tries to remove a slave collar from Teito's neck, the collar instead binds Teito to Frau, making him Teito's master and causing the collar to explode if they are separated for more than forty-eight hours. This forces them to remain together and drives much of Frau's involvement in the plot. He also found and brought Teito the reincarnated form of his deceased best friend, a small dragon named Burupya, to comfort him.

Key relationships define much of his character. He shares a brotherly but bickering bond with his fellow Bishops Castor and Labrador. His most significant relationship is with Teito Klein, whom he views as his own family and as his light in the darkness. He shows a softer, more emotional side around Teito, and his care is demonstrated when he stops Castor from erasing Teito's memories to preserve the memory of his friend Mikage's last smile. He also had a close, father-son-like relationship with his mentor, Bastien, whose death forces Frau to confront his own suppressed grief.

Throughout the series, Frau undergoes notable development, particularly in his emotional openness. Initially portraying feigned apathy towards death, he is scolded by Teito for not properly mourning Bastien, which helps him reconnect with his humanity. His character arc also involves his struggle with the corrupting influence of Verloren's scythe, a powerful weapon he possesses that has a mind of its own and threatens to consume his soul. He fights to maintain control to avoid hurting those he loves.

Notable abilities include his incredibly powerful offensive Zaiphon, a form of light-based magic. He holds the all-time highest score in the Bishop examination, as his light was so strong it completely erased all darkness from the testing area. As the Ghost Zehel, his specific ability is to sever the bonds tying a person's heart to misfortune, effectively purifying their souls. He is also the only one of the Seven Ghosts who can wield Verloren's scythe, which he uses as a weapon in combat. Due to his status as a Ghost, his body is technically dead; his heart does not beat, and he does not give off body heat, making him highly resilient to injuries but potentially vulnerable to extreme cold.
