Description
Akira Fudo is the protagonist of the Devilman series created by Go Nagai. He is a Japanese teenager who lives with the Makimura family, including his close friend Miki Makimura. Known for his deeply empathetic nature and tendency to cry easily, he is often called a crybaby. His life changes when his childhood friend Ryo Asuka reveals the existence of demons and takes him to a secret gathering called a Sabbath. During the chaos, the powerful demon Amon attempts to consume him, but Akira’s pure heart allows him to absorb Amon’s powers instead, transforming into Devilman—a being with the body and abilities of a demon but the heart of a human. This transformation grants him immense supernatural abilities, including superhuman strength, speed, durability, flight via sprouting wings, energy beams from his forehead antennae, fire breath, regeneration, claws, fangs, and a prehensile tail. Despite his demonic power, Akira struggles to retain his humanity and uses his abilities to fight demons and protect people. His key relationships drive his story: his bond with Ryo is complex, as Ryo is ultimately revealed to be Satan, the leader of the demons; his love for Miki Makimura anchors him to humanity. The narrative often takes a tragic turn, with Miki’s death at the hands of a paranoid mob breaking Akira’s spirit and leading to an apocalyptic final battle. Akira has also appeared in crossovers, such as in Mazinger Z vs. Devilman, where he forms an alliance with Koji Kabuto to fight a joint threat from Dr. Hell’s mechanical beasts and the Demon Clan. In comedic works like CB Chara Go Nagai World, he appears in a chibi form and struggles comically with his transformations while still retaining his heroic identity.
