Description
Keith Red is a fictional character from the anime Project ARMS. He is a product of the Egrigori, a clandestine organization dedicated to advanced biological engineering. As part of the Keith series, he is a genetically engineered male clone created to serve the organization's goals. The purpose of the Keith series was to develop a specific genetic code required to bond with powerful bio-implants known as ARMS. Unlike the prototype ARMS, which possessed their own artificial intelligences, the implants given to the Keith series, including Keith Red, lacked such consciousness. Keith Red's activated ARMS form is known as the Gryphon. His genetic material was crucial to Egrigori's plans, as it was used to cultivate a line of genetically engineered offspring who would become perfect, symbiotic hosts for the stolen ARMS prototypes. These children were part of an experiment conducted in Abumisawa Village before the facility was destroyed, and the surviving children were placed with foster families.
In terms of personality, Keith Red is defined by his arrogance, ambition, and a twisted, condescending fascination with the ARMS children. He considers himself their older brother, a belief rooted in the fact that his own genes were used to create them. This familial claim is devoid of genuine affection and instead reflects his sense of ownership and superiority. He is driven by a desire for power and status within the Egrigori, showing a particular interest in harnessing the immense strength of the Jabberwock ARMS for his own advancement. Keith Red holds a general disgust for the concept of protecting the weak, a trait that aligns him more with the ruthless, survival-of-the-fittest mentality of his creators. He is also notably sadistic, showing amusement at the suffering of others and no hesitation in eliminating those he deems obstacles, including the Chapel Twins' combat cyborg and the ARMS child Jeff Bowen.
Keith Red’s primary role in the story is that of a high-ranking agent and a significant antagonist. He is dispatched by the Egrigori on critical missions to eliminate rogue operatives, such as the Chapel Twins, and to retrieve the powerful ARMS hosts. He is personally responsible for leading a large force to attack the rebuilt Abumisawa Village, an event that leads to the death of Katsumi Akagi and the subsequent full activation of the Jabberwock. During this attack, the rampaging Jabberwock maims Keith Red, leaving a permanent paw-like scar on his left cheek. Despite this failure, he becomes even more determined to capture the Jabberwock's power. Later, during Operation Snark Hunt, he grows bored with the slow progress of the Red Caps and decides to hunt the ARMS children himself, leading to his final confrontation.
His key relationships are defined by his connection to the other Keith series clones and his antagonistic role towards the ARMS children. Hayato Shingu, the host of the White Knight ARMS, mistakenly believes Keith Red is responsible for the death of his father. Keith Red finds this accusation amusing and denies it, though Hayato refuses to believe him until the end. While not the killer, he is still a mortal enemy to Hayato. He also develops a specific enmity with Ryo Takatsuki, the host of the Jabberwock, whose power both terrifies and fascinates him. His relationship with the other ARMS children is that of a predator to prey, though he allows some to live out of a twisted sense of brotherhood or to serve a larger purpose. Notably, he is not the only Keith series agent; others include Keith Blue, who led a rebellion against the Egrigori, and Keith Black, among others. In his final moments, he expresses dismay at being just another failed experiment of the Egrigori, revealing a glimmer of the existential despair common to his clone series.
Keith Red’s character development culminates in his defeat and death. His overconfidence and desire to prove his power lead him to confront Hayato. After seemingly defeating the young ARMS host, Hayato awakens the true power of the White Knight. In this state, Hayato not only wounds Keith Red but also severs his limbs. The Gryphon’s famed regenerative abilities prove useless, as the White Knight’s power deactivates the nanomachines responsible for his repair. Mortally wounded and with his body disintegrating, Keith Red realizes too late that he was simply a tool. He admits his plan was to use the Jabberwock’s power to rise within the Egrigori, but he dies knowing he failed. His last words reiterate that he did not kill Hayato's father, a truth Hayato only accepts later when another Keith series clone appears.
Notable abilities of Keith Red stem from his ARMS implant, which grants him superhuman physical capabilities. Even in his human form, he can survive powerful psychic attacks and use his limbs to transform into long, black blades capable of severing a cyborg's limbs. He can also generate powerful sonic attacks with a mere touch. His true power is unleashed when he transforms into the Gryphon, a large, monstrous, bipedal avian creature. In this form, he possesses immense strength, the ability to generate and project spheres of black energy, and razor-sharp claws with attached blades. His most devastating ability is a sonic attack generated by his long, sharp hair, which vibrates at such intensity that it can shatter glass and is claimed to be capable of destroying his enemies. However, his regeneration, while formidable, can be permanently negated by the specific powers of the White Knight ARMS. Other ARMS users also comment that their implants seem to vibrate in fear when near Keith Red, indicating the sheer power of his presence.
