Description
Meister Kirisaki, whose real name is Sylvan Kirisaki, serves as the enigmatic general manager of the Pantasia main branch. He is a man of mixed French and Japanese heritage, born as the son of Yuuichi Kirisaki, the powerful owner of the rival bakery chain St. Pierre. His past is marked by hardship and abandonment. His father left the family when his mother was pregnant with his younger sister, Sophie, to pursue a dream of creating a bread that could represent Japan. Following his mother's death, a young Sylvan was forced to sell bread on the streets to support himself and his sister, a difficult period that shaped his resourcefulness and independence.
One of the most defining characteristics of Meister Kirisaki is his secretive and mysterious persona, which is most famously represented by the titanium mask he always wears. The mask features a peacock feather that is not a mere decoration but is actually attached to a live bird named Coo, which he hides using his remarkable skills in magic and sleight of hand. His mastery of magic is not just for show; it was a practical skill learned in his youth to attract customers to his bread stall, and it has granted him extraordinary dexterity and hand strength, allowing him to knead dough in ways that seem impossible to other bakers. When acting as a bread judge, the feathers on his mask are known to change depending on the quality of the bread he tastes, serving as a unique and theatrical barometer of his approval.
His relationship with his father is a central pillar of his character and motivation. Yuuichi Kirisaki is a complex and antagonistic figure who initially appears as a kind old man who inspired the protagonist, Kazuma Azuma, but later reveals himself to be a ruthless rival. The emotional trauma from his childhood is deep; a key memory involves his father returning with loaves of bread only to eat them all himself in front of his starving children, an act that created a lasting rift. In the story, Meister Kirisaki is initially an ally who supports and evaluates Azuma's team, even acting to check the schemes of the corporate saboteur Yukino Azusagawa. However, his motives are complex, and he is later revealed to have his own agenda, confronting his father and the St. Pierre organization in a major competition. His journey reveals a deep-seated desire to understand the truth about his father's transformation and to ultimately free him from the corrupting influence of the "Devil's Gopan," a malevolent bread that turns its consumer evil.
Over the course of the narrative, Meister Kirisaki undergoes significant development. While he begins as an almost untouchable, cool-headed figure, his backstory and actions reveal a character driven by familial pain and a hidden sense of justice. He eventually plays a crucial role in the final conflict against the Bread Demon King, allying with Kazuma Azuma to save his father. In the resolution, after Yuuichi is freed from the demon's control, Meister Kirisaki reconciles with him and is entrusted with a great responsibility. He ultimately inherits the main branch of St. Pierre from his father, marking a new chapter for both the business and his family.
