Description
Draus is an immortal higher vampire and the father of Draluc, belonging to the powerful and ancient Dragon Clan. He is likely to become the next head of this clan, which is known for its wealth and aristocratic influence. Draus was born a dhampir, the child of a human woman named Mina and a vampire known as the Progenitor. He was turned into a vampire by his father sometime after his birth. He resides primarily in Romania but commands a global network of family castles.
In terms of personality, Draus is a study in contrasts. He has an intimidating presence, partly due to a thousand-yard stare that can unnerve others, and he is prone to overreacting. However, he is fundamentally a doting and affectionate parent, often described as an over-lenient father who spoils his son excessively. This overindulgence, stemming from Draluc's historically frail constitution, inadvertently contributed to Draluc’s lazy and hedonistic personality. Draus is also a self-admitted Luddite, unable to keep up with modern technology. He tends to give up easily or rely on his friend Northdin for help with new devices, and his pride is fragile, becoming emotionally crushed when he fails. Other characters, such as his wife Mira and friend Northdin, describe him as being like a dog, a fun-loving goofball who is capable but often runs on empty. Despite his silliness, he is very family-oriented and puts tremendous effort into everything he does.
Draus holds a significant position in vampire society as the head of the Dragon Clan. He founded and leads a council of major vampire clan heads, which includes figures like Northdin and the troublemaking Y-dan, to govern vampire affairs. His role in the story is often tied to his family. A key moment occurs when he visits Draluc after his son’s castle is destroyed and he moves in with the vampire hunter Ronaldo. Initially horrified by Ronaldo's violent treatment of Draluc and his familiar John, Draus resolves to bring his son home. However, upon observing Draluc's active social life and newfound happiness in the city, which starkly contrasts with his son's previously isolated existence in their castle, Draus permits Draluc to stay, recognizing his son's emotional growth and independence.
Draus maintains several key relationships. His relationship with his son Draluc is one of deep paternal devotion, though his spoiling had the unintended consequence of fostering Draluc's slothful tendencies. He is deeply devoted to his wife, Mira, an Old Blood vampire of Japanese descent. He keeps a photo of her in his coffin and has a ritual of kissing it before he sleeps because she is often away from home due to her work. He has a strong friendship with Northdin, whom he relies on for help with technology and sometimes praises with the portmanteau Sasudin. Conversely, he holds a powerful grudge against Ydan Ojisan. Draus also has a pair of daifuku rodent familiars named Chuo and Chuko.
Throughout the series, Draus shows development primarily in his acceptance of his son’s independent life. Recognizing Draluc’s happiness living with a human and working as a detective is a turning point, leading him to prioritize Draluc’s emotional well-being over his own protective instincts. He also demonstrates subtle parental concern, such as when he discovers Draluc surrounded by sports balls resembling John after the armadillo had gone missing.
As a powerful higher vampire, Draus possesses formidable abilities. He can use almost all known vampire abilities, including hypnosis, flight, and immortality. He is also skilled in transformation, with the ability to change into various creatures such as a bat and a white wolf. Like his own father, he can even transform into a dragon with a wolf-like appearance.
