Description
Ewan Remington serves as the minister of the Order of Magdalene, also acting as a field agent and the second-in-command to Sister Kate Valentine, the head of the New York branch. He is described as a first-class militia and a very influential member of the order. Though his appearance is that of a man around twenty-seven years old, his true age is unknown and he is certainly older than he looks. His origins are in the United States, and his height is recorded as 183 centimeters.
On the surface, Ewan Remington has a friendly, calm, and controlled personality, even in the face of difficult situations. He is known for liking to flirt and is very popular with the girls at the Magdalene Order, including Rosette Christopher, who has a small crush on him; however, he does not see her in a romantic light but rather as a surrogate daughter. Despite his amiable exterior, he is a very powerful and mysterious fighter who hides many secrets. He is determined to keep fighting his enemies until the day he dies, no matter the consequences to himself.
A key part of Remington's motivation and past is tied to Mary Magdalene. He seems to have been in love with her and still remembers her fondly. It is revealed that he has a personal history with the demon Chrono, as he was the young man who failed to protect Mary Magdalene when Chrono was sent to kidnap her. This event appears to have set him on his long path as a fighter against demonic forces.
Ewan Remington plays a significant role as a mentor and protector to Rosette Christopher and Chrono. He was the one who took the pair to the Magdalene convent in New York, and he constantly keeps a close watch on them. He is a person Rosette always respects and relies on. In the anime, towards the end of the story, he leaves the Order. He is later seen looking roughly the same age but unshaven, witnessing a significant prophetic event.
The character has notable abilities and a mysterious nature. He appears to have the ability to warp or teleport, moving from New York to San Francisco instantaneously. During a phone conversation, he states that he is an angel, though he is implied to be a fallen one, later declaring that he has "no regrets about my torn wings" and calling himself a sinner. The nature of his existence seems to grant him a form of immortality or extremely slowed aging, as he appears exactly the same in a flashback from decades earlier as he does in the main storyline.
In the manga, the source material for the anime, Remington's background is further detailed. He had suffered a severe injury that would have ended his duty as an exorcist, so he volunteered to be infused with Legion, described as a devil's equivalent to cells, to continue his work. After the events of the story, he retires from active duty but continues his duty as a father of the Catholic Church, spending his remaining years running a church in the countryside.
