Description
Gavlet Gablae is a young man from the rural countryside of the planet Koam, born into a family of minor local nobility. Driven by ambition and the hopes of his hometown, he left home with a used Heavy Metal robot, the Allone, which he purchased with borrowed money, aiming to earn a commission in the military forces of the Pentagona system's absolute ruler, Oldna Poseidal. Standing approximately 210 centimeters tall with long, wavy blue-black hair and blue eyes, Gavlet possesses the striking appearance of a handsome nobleman or a gallant knight.

This knightly image is not just a matter of looks, but the core of his personality. Gavlet Gablae genuinely believes in the old-fashioned ideals of chivalry, honor, and glory, making him a character often compared to Don Quixote. In his world, the era of knights piloting Heavy Metals in personal combat is considered a romantic notion of the past, and modern pilots are viewed as simple soldiers in a vast military machine. This anachronistic mindset causes him to act in ways that others find strange, delusional, or even comedic. Despite his handsome and often serious facade, he is prone to theatrical declarations, holding fiercely to his personal code of righteousness, and becoming obsessed over perceived slights or objects of his affection, which leads to a passionate and sometimes foolish nature. However, his commitment to his underlings is genuine. He takes responsibility for those who follow him, tolerates their shortcomings, and earns their loyalty, even if they openly mock his grandiose dreams.

Gavlet's driving motivation undergoes a significant evolution throughout the story. Initially, his singular goal is to rise through the ranks of Poseidal's military and achieve success. However, his path is forever altered when he encounters Daba Myroad, the protagonist and leader of a rebel force. A petty dispute over a stolen meal and a fairy named Lilith Fuau ignites a fierce and obsessive rivalry; Gavlet becomes determined to defeat Daba and the legendary white Heavy Metal, L-Gaim, as a matter of personal honor. This rivalry defines much of his early role, as he joins a band of wasteland bandits after their leader dies, eventually leading them to enlist as a unit in the Poseidal military. Despite his considerable piloting talent and a string of promotions that grant him command of the vessel Slender Skala and eventually a place among the Poseidal Knights, the Elite 13, he is consistently unable to best his rival, often suffering defeat and humiliation in their encounters.

As a pilot, Gavlet Gablae is remarkably versatile and talented, mastering a wider variety of Heavy Metal machines than almost any other character in the series. His symbolic unit is the Bat-Shu, but he also pilots the Graia, Ashura Temple, Grun, and the powerful Original Auge, among others, demonstrating his ability to adapt to different combat styles.

A key turning point for his character is his relationship with Quwasan Olibee, Daba's brainwashed half-sister. After meeting her, Gavlet's obsessive drive shifts from defeating Daba to protecting Olibee. This powerful emotional attachment ultimately supersedes his long-standing military ambition and rivalry. His romantic feelings for her lead him to defect from Poseidal's forces and form a reluctant alliance with his former nemesis, Daba. In the final battles against the empire, his primary goal is to rescue Olibee, and he plays a crucial role in aiding Daba and the rebellion, even delivering decisive blows that contribute to the downfall of the true antagonists. After the conflict concludes, Gavlet bids farewell to Daba, who remains on Koam to care for an injured Olibee, having completed his transformation from a comical, persistent rival to a heroic, if still chivalrous, ally.
