Description
Lorelei is the aggregate sentience of the Seventh Fonon, the fonon of Sound, in the world of Auldrant. Discovered in B.D. 2695 by Professor Southern-Cross, the Seventh Fonon was found in the planet’s atmosphere and is the rarest of the seven elemental fonons. Unlike the other fonons, which correspond to physical elements, the Seventh Fonon governs sound and, more importantly, grants the ability to perceive future events when properly harnessed. Lorelei is not a physical being but a conscious, collective intelligence manifested from this fonon. It has no true form or personality in the conventional sense, yet it possesses a will and can form pacts with individuals who are capable of channeling its power.
The most significant pact was made by Yulia Jue, a young Seventh Fonist who, with Lorelei’s assistance, restored the Kingdom of Hod after a catastrophic event. Yulia used the power of Lorelei to rebuild the Planetary Storm—a protective barrier around Auldrant—and to create the Key of Lorelei, a relic that could hold and direct the fonon’s energy. Through this pact, Yulia also inscribed the Score, a set of prophecies that dictated the future of humanity for millennia. The Score became the foundation of the Order of Lorelei, a religious and military organization that interprets the prophecies and maintains its influence across the nations of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear and Malkuth.
In the story, Lorelei serves as a central yet largely unseen force. Its power is sought by various factions: the Order of Lorelei uses the Score as a tool of control, while antagonists like Van Grants aim to free Lorelei from its containment in the Key, believing that a liberated Seventh Fonon will tear down the Score and force humanity to choose its own destiny. The Key of Lorelei is a crucial artifact, and the climax of the narrative revolves around whether to release Lorelei or preserve the status quo. The entity itself does not act directly, but its influence drives the entire conflict.
Lorelei’s notable abilities stem from its nature as the Seventh Fonon. It can be used to read the future, an ability that only Seventh Fonists like Yulia Jue and the protagonist Tear can partially access. It also has the capacity to generate immense energy, which can reshape the environment or reinforce the Planetary Storm. The Grand Fonic Hymn, a chanted song, is the specific method by which Yulia maintained her pact with Lorelei, suggesting that sound itself is the medium through which communication with the entity occurs. Despite its power, Lorelei is not inherently malevolent or benevolent; it is a neutral cosmic force that responds to those who can attune to it.
Relationships surrounding Lorelei are primarily indirect. Yulia Jue is the historical figure most closely tied to it, having established the pact that shaped the world. The Order of Lorelei is named after the entity and derives its authority from the Score, but its leadership does not directly commune with Lorelei. Van Grants, the main antagonist, seeks to break the seal on the Key of Lorelei and release the fonon, believing this will end the tyranny of fate. The character Lorelei itself undergoes no personal development because it is not a human protagonist; its role is more akin to a natural phenomenon that the characters must understand and either harness or free. The story’s resolution involves the cast confronting the consequences of Lorelei’s existence, ultimately deciding whether to keep it contained or let it change the world.
