Description
Nobutsuna Naoe is a central figure in the story of Mirage of Blaze, a Kanshousha, or a soul that reincarnates across time with intact memories. In his modern incarnation, he exists as Tachibana Yoshiaki, a tall, well-groomed man in his late twenties who was born into a family of Buddhist monks. His original historical identity is that of a retainer to Uesugi Kagetora and the second-in-command of the Meikai Uesugi army. Historically, he was the biological son of Nagao Kagesada who later became the adopted son and son-in-law of Naoe Sanetsuna, a principal retainer of Uesugi Kenshin. He succeeded his adoptive father as lord of Yoita Castle in 1577, supported Uesugi Kagekatsu during the Battle of Otate in 1578-79, and was killed by Yasuda Hidehiro at Kasugayama Castle in 1581. His first body of possession was a man named Kurosaemon before he took the body of Tachibana Yoshiaki.
Naoe's role in the present-day narrative is that of a mysterious rescuer who approaches the high school student Takaya Ougi and reveals to him that Takaya is the reincarnation of Kagetora Uesugi, the adopted son of the feudal lord Kenshin Uesugi. Naoe, himself a Kanshousha, reawakens Takaya's dormant abilities to exorcise vengeful spirits and fight in the Feudal Underworld, a hidden conflict between restless warrior spirits from Japan's past. While most Kanshousha retain their past-life memories, Takaya does not, having sealed them away during his last reincarnation, and he is often resistant to recovering them.
On the surface, Naoe appears calm, reserved, and highly competent, though he is secretive. He acts as a reliable right-hand man to Takaya, striving to guide him into becoming the powerful and proud leader he once was.
