Description
"Macross 7" is a 49-episode anime series set in the Macross universe, taking place in 2045, 35 years after the events of the original "Super Dimension Fortress Macross." The story centers on the colonization fleet, Macross 7, as it travels through space in search of a new habitable planet. The fleet is led by Captain Maximilian Jenius, a veteran of the First Space War, and includes the city ship City 7, which houses a civilian population and a military force.
The protagonist, Nekki Basara, is the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Fire Bomber. Unlike traditional heroes, Basara is a pacifist who believes in the power of music to communicate and resolve conflicts. His songs, particularly "Planet Dance" and "Try Again," become central to the narrative as they are used to reach out to the series' antagonists, the Protodeviln. These ancient, energy-draining beings are awakened from their slumber and begin attacking the fleet, using mind-controlled soldiers called the Varauta Army to harvest Spiritia, a life energy essential to their survival.
The Protodeviln, led by Geperunichi and Gigil, are initially portrayed as malevolent entities, but their motivations and origins are gradually revealed. They are not inherently evil but are driven by their need for Spiritia to survive. Basara's music, which carries a unique form of Spiritia, becomes a key factor in bridging the gap between humans and the Protodeviln. His refusal to conform to military orders and his insistence on using music as a weapon of peace create tension with the fleet's military leaders, including Captain Jenius and his daughter Mylene Jenius, who is also the bassist for Fire Bomber.
Mylene, alongside Ray Lovelock, the band's keyboardist and a former Zentradi soldier, and Veffidas Feaze, the drummer, play supporting roles in the series. Mylene's character arc explores her struggles with identity, her relationship with her father, and her growing admiration for Basara's ideals. The series also features Gamlin Kizaki, a skilled pilot and rival to Basara, who initially clashes with the musician's unconventional methods but eventually comes to respect his approach.
As the conflict escalates, the Protodeviln's true nature is revealed, and their connection to the ancient Protoculture, the progenitor race of the Macross universe, is explored. The series culminates in a climactic battle where Basara's music, combined with the efforts of the Macross 7 fleet, leads to a resolution that emphasizes understanding and coexistence over destruction. The narrative concludes with the Protodeviln finding a way to sustain themselves without harming others, and the Macross 7 fleet continuing its journey through space.
"Macross 7" blends elements of mecha action, space opera, and musical performance, with its focus on music as a transformative force setting it apart from other entries in the Macross franchise. The series explores themes of communication, empathy, and the power of art, while maintaining the franchise's signature blend of personal drama and large-scale conflict.
