Masashi Sugawara is a Japanese voice actor and narrator born on July 14, 1962, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. He is affiliated with the talent agency Office Osawa. Sugawara began his career in the mid-1980s, with one of his earliest roles being Gameran in the 1985 television anime series Ninja Robots.

Sugawara is known for his stable, low-pitched voice, which allows him to portray a wide range of characters, from authoritative and serious figures to comedic roles. He has built an extensive filmography across anime, video games, and foreign language dubbing.

In anime, Sugawara has played a variety of notable roles. He is recognized for his performances as South Burning in the Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory OVA series and as Ray Lovelock in Macross 7. He voiced the protagonist Jean Valjean in the 2007 world masterpiece theater anime Les Misérables: Shōjo Cosette. Other significant credits include George Joestar I in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Ricardo Martinez in Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger, and the role of Zero in the 1998 series DT Eightron. His work in the 2020s includes the role of Fujishiro in the 2024 series Negative Positive Angler. He has also had recurring roles in long-running franchises, providing voices for different characters in the Case Closed franchise over many years.

Beyond anime, Sugawara is highly active in video games. He is known for voicing Edmond Honda in several Capcom fighting games, including Street Fighter Alpha 3 and the Capcom vs. SNK series. Sugawara has a prolific career in Japanese dubbing (fukikae) of foreign films and television series. He is the primary Japanese dubbing voice for actor Wesley Snipes, having voiced his characters in numerous films including the Blade series, The Art of War sequels, and The Expendables 3. He is also the regular dubbing voice for Will Smith's Detective Mike Lowrey in the Bad Boys film series. His other notable dubbing roles include Peter Weller's Alex Murphy in RoboCop, Benicio del Toro's Alejandro in the Sicario films, and Laurence Fishburne's Captain Miller in Event Horizon.

Outside of voice acting, Sugawara is a passionate fisherman. This personal interest has led to professional work as a host for the fishing program Gojohan no Okami. He has also served as a radio personality for J-WAVE and is a frequent narrator for commercials, including campaigns for major franchises like Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean.
