Description
"Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime" is a 2009 anime film that serves as a condensed retelling of the first half of the "Macross Frontier" television series, with new scenes and reworked animation. The story is set in the year 2059, aboard the Macross Frontier fleet, one of many colonization fleets traveling through space in search of habitable planets. The narrative centers on Alto Saotome, a former kabuki actor turned Valkyrie pilot, who becomes entangled in a complex web of love, war, and music.

Alto is drawn into a conflict when the Frontier fleet encounters the Vajra, a mysterious and highly advanced alien species. During a Vajra attack, Alto rescues Ranka Lee, a timid aspiring singer working as a waitress, and Sheryl Nome, a famous galactic pop idol. Both women play pivotal roles in the unfolding events, with Ranka’s mysterious connection to the Vajra and Sheryl’s influence as a cultural icon shaping the course of the story. As the Vajra threat intensifies, the Frontier fleet’s military, led by Captain Jeffrey Wilder, struggles to defend the civilian population while uncovering the truth behind the aliens’ aggression.

Ranka’s singing has a unique effect on the Vajra, hinting at a deeper link between her past and the alien species. Meanwhile, Sheryl’s music becomes a rallying point for the fleet’s morale, though she harbors her own secrets about her health and the origins of her fame. The love triangle between Alto, Ranka, and Sheryl adds emotional depth to the narrative, as their personal relationships evolve amidst the chaos of war. The film explores themes of identity, cultural influence, and the power of music, with the characters’ choices and relationships driving the plot forward.

The story also delves into political intrigue, as factions within the fleet and the galaxy at large manipulate events for their own gain. The emergence of Grace O’Connor, a shadowy figure with ties to both Sheryl and the Vajra, reveals a larger conspiracy that threatens not only the Frontier fleet but the entire human race. The film culminates in a climactic battle against the Vajra, with Alto, Ranka, and Sheryl at the center of the conflict, their fates intertwined with the survival of the fleet.

"Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime" combines mecha action, space opera, and musical elements, staying true to the franchise’s tradition of blending these genres. The film sets the stage for its sequel, "Macross Frontier: Sayonara no Tsubasa," which continues the story and resolves the overarching narrative. The characters’ development, the intricate plot, and the integration of music as a central theme make it a compelling entry in the Macross series.
