Description
Alto Saotome is the central protagonist of the Macross Frontier film adaptation, The False Songstress. He is a 17-year-old high school student enrolled in the pilot training course at Mihoshi Academy aboard the Macross Frontier fleet. Physically, Alto is an attractive young man with distinctive long, bluish-gray hair that he typically wears tied back in a ponytail with a red string, though he occasionally lets it down. Due to his fine features and long hair, he is frequently mistaken for a girl at first glance, a trait he inherited from his late mother, Miyo, who was considered a great beauty. This effeminate appearance has earned him the nickname "Hime," meaning "Princess," from his peers, a moniker that follows him even into his military career as his callsign.
Alto was born into the prestigious Saotome Kabuki troupe and was rigorously trained by his father, Ranzo Saotome, from a young age. He gained notoriety for his performance as the Cherry Blossom Princess. Despite being the apparent heir to the family legacy, Alto developed a passionate yearning to become a pilot and fly in a real, open sky, feeling stifled by the artificial environment of the space colony. This conflict led to a thorny relationship with his father, who disowned him and named Alto's adopted older brother, Yasaburo, as the new heir. Alto harbors no ill feelings toward his brother over this decision, as he does not see acting as his true destiny. In the film version, his reasons for leaving Kabuki are deepened by a personal identity crisis, as playing female roles for so long led him to question his own gender orientation.
In terms of personality, Alto is described as proud, hot-tempered, and somewhat aloof or standoffish. He is rebellious and sarcastic, often chafing against authority and the confines of his life aboard the colony. His primary motivation is to escape the low artificial gravity and fake sky of Macross Frontier to fulfill his dream of piloting a fighter through the real atmosphere of a planet. His life changes dramatically during a Vajra attack on a Sheryl Nome concert. After a pilot is killed, Alto commandeers a VF-25F Messiah variable fighter to protect a young girl named Ranka Lee, showcasing his natural flying skills. This act draws the attention of Ozma Lee, who recruits him into the private military company S.M.S. (Strategic Military Services).
Alto's role in the story is defined by his actions as a pilot and his entanglement in a complex love triangle. He becomes the object of affection for two women: the galaxy-renowned pop star Sheryl Nome and the aspiring young singer Ranka Lee. He meets both during the first Vajra attack, and the trio remain deeply intertwined throughout the conflict. Alto is initially focused solely on his piloting dreams and does not think much about romance, but his relationships with Sheryl and Ranka force him to confront his feelings. Throughout the film, he is shown to be fairly indecisive when it comes to romance, unable to clearly choose between the two women. His key relationships are with his estranged father Ranzo, his protective senior officer Ozma Lee, his S.M.S. comrades Michael Blanc and Luca Angelloni, and the two singers who compete for his heart.
Regarding his development, Alto begins as a rebellious student running from his family's expectations, but the Vajra conflict pushes him to grow into a dedicated pilot focused on protecting the people he loves. His notable abilities are in piloting; he is a highly skilled variable fighter pilot whose natural talent and flying maneuvers, such as his signature "corkscrew," are immediately recognized by the veteran pilots of S.M.S.. In the film adaptation The False Songstress, specific scenes highlight his deepening connection with Sheryl, including a moment where he wears her earring and lets down his hair, and a sequence where he is briefly possessed by the power of a Fold Quartz, allowing him to witness a fragment of Sheryl's painful past.
