Description
Mikhail Blanc, also known as Michael Blanc, is a supporting character in the anime film Macross Frontier: The False Songstress. He attends Mihoshi Academy as a student in the pilot training course, where he is a classmate and friendly rival of Alto Saotome. It is Blanc who first gives Alto the nickname Alto Hime, or Princess Alto, a teasing moniker that sticks throughout the story. He hails from a tragic family background: his parents died when he was young, and he was raised by his older sister Jessica. Jessica later took her own life after being disgraced by a friendly fire incident, an event that deeply affects Blanc and contributes to his guarded emotional nature.

Blanc presents himself as a confident and flirtatious ladies' man, carrying a personal motto of always acquiring his target, whether that target is an enemy in battle or a romantic interest. Despite this brash exterior, he is one of the most perceptive characters in the cast, often noticing subtle dynamics such as the love triangle between Alto, Ranka Lee, and Sheryl Nome, and becoming aware of Grace O'Connor's hidden machinations before others do. His playboy facade hides a more cynical and vulnerable side, shaped by his family's history and his fear of emotional loss.

Within the story, Blanc serves as a second lieutenant and the sniper of the S.M.S. Skull Squadron, piloting a custom blue VF-25G Messiah variable fighter outfitted for long-range precision attacks. His marksmanship skills are exceptional, making him a critical asset in battles against the Vajra. He initially expresses doubt about Alto joining the squadron but later fully accepts him as a comrade.

His most important relationship is with Klan Klang, a Meltrandi childhood friend. For much of the story, Blanc hides his deep romantic feelings for Klan behind casual teasing and flirtation with other women, a defense mechanism rooted in his fear of repeating the loss he experienced with his sister. In the movie adaptation The False Songstress and its sequel, Blanc undergoes significant development: rather than sacrificing himself as he does in the television series, he survives. During the final battle, when Klan is struck by enemy fire, Blanc leaps to her side with the words I won't let you die alone, and both of them ultimately survive, allowing his character arc to resolve with a more hopeful outcome. His notable abilities include masterful sniping, keen observational skills, and the piloting of a specialized variable fighter optimized for his sniper role.
