Houko Kuwashima
Description
Houko Kuwashima is a Japanese voice actress and singer born on December 12, 1975, in Kanegasaki, Iwate Prefecture. She is affiliated with Aoni Production, a major talent agency. From a young age, Kuwashima was interested in acting, inspired by watching performances by the Shiki Theatre Company and films like Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. To pursue her goal of becoming a voice actor, she moved to Tokyo after high school and enrolled in the Aoni Juku training school, joining Aoni Production in 1995.
Kuwashima made her debut in 1995 with a small role in the anime series Sailor Moon SuperS. Her first major leading role came in 1996 as Yurika Misumaru in Martian Successor Nadesico, which significantly raised her popularity. Known for her versatile vocal range, she is capable of portraying a wide variety of characters, from young boys to mature women, often playing multiple roles within a single work. Her voice is recognized for its distinct quality, yet her range allows her to disappear into very different character types.
Throughout her extensive career, Kuwashima has voiced numerous iconic and leading characters. She is well-known for long-running roles such as Sango in the Inuyasha series and its sequel Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, and Chizuru Yukimura in the Hakuōki franchise. In the mecha genre, she has had significant parts in the Gundam franchise, playing Flay Allster and Natarle Badgiruel in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, and Stella Loussier in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. She also voiced Yuki Mori in the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and its sequels. In the magical girl genre, she is recognized as Itsuki Myōdōin, also known as Cure Sunshine, from Heartcatch Precure! and subsequent Precure All Stars films. Her role as the stoic assassin Kirika Yuumura in Noir is a defining part of her career and a classic in the "girls-with-guns" genre. Another beloved role is Kagura in the beloved comedy series Azumanga Daioh. She has also taken on boy roles, such as Minoru Kokubunji in Chobits and Kenny in the Beyblade series.
In the long-running series Bleach, Kuwashima voices the fast-moving Captain of the Second Division, Suì-Fēng, a role she has continued in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. Her filmography also includes roles in The Story of Saiunkoku as Shuurei Kou, the title character in Princess Arete, Clare in Claymore, and Bocca in The Melody of Oblivion. Kuwashima has also made notable contributions to video games. She is the voice of Presea Combatir in the Tales of Symphonia games and animations, Tomoyo Sakagami in the Clannad visual novel and its anime adaptation, and Isara Gunther in the Valkyria Chronicles series. Other prominent game roles include Kasumi in the Dead or Alive franchise, Seong Mi-na in the Soulcalibur series, and Mei Ling and Para-Medic in Metal Gear Solid. In the Harukanaru Toki no Naka de franchise, she has portrayed multiple characters, including Ran Morimura.
Throughout her career, Kuwashima has collaborated repeatedly with specific production teams and directors. Her frequent roles in Sunrise (now Bandai Namco Filmworks) mecha anime, such as the Gundam SEED series and various properties, and her extensive work on adaptations of games from Koei Tecmo's Neoromance series, like Harukanaru Toki no Naka de, highlight these recurring professional relationships. A unique and well-known aspect of her career is a fandom meme regarding the high mortality rate of her characters, particularly in the Gundam SEED series, where all her roles met their end. This has become a long-standing joke, with fans often anticipating the death of a character she voices.
In addition to acting, Kuwashima has contributed as a singer, performing theme songs for anime such as "Tokihanate!" for Blue Gender. While initially hesitant about the "idol voice actor" aspect of singing early in her career, she has since released several albums and character song CDs. In recognition of her work and background, she was appointed as a cultural ambassador of Iwate Prefecture in 2010.
