TV-Series
Description
Canaria Berstein is a first lieutenant within the Strategic Military Services, or S.M.S., serving as both the pilot of the VB-6 König Monster variable bomber, with the callsign Rabbit 1, and as the organization's medic. She holds a medical license and has practical experience working as a doctor, a skill that proves invaluable during both peacetime and combat situations. According to the series novelization, her heritage is a mix of German and Caribbean descent.
Standing 180 centimeters tall, Canaria is a woman of few words, but her calm and measured demeanor means that when she does speak, her input carries significant weight and often serves as a grounding force for her colleagues. She frequently acts as a voice of reason, particularly for the headstrong Skull Squadron leader, Ozma Lee, offering him counsel and a steady presence. Beyond her role as a pilot and medical officer, she acts as a mentor and source of encouragement for the younger members of the S.M.S., including Alto Saotome and Michael Blanc, helping them navigate the hardships they face. Her practical skills extend to the domestic as well; she is shown to be deft with her hands, once carving a playful image of a leaping rabbit from an apple.
Canaria's primary motivation is the safety and wellbeing of her family. She has a husband and a young son named Eddie who live in the Macross Frontier fleet, keeping a photograph of them in her cockpit for inspiration. During the violent encounters with the alien Vajra, her family is often forced to take shelter, and her determination to protect them and ensure they survive the conflict fuels her actions in battle. Despite being a married woman, some dialogue and situations hint at a very close, and possibly past romantic, relationship with her squad mate Ozma, suggesting a complex history between them that remains largely unspoken.
Throughout the Vajra war, Canaria remains a steadfast and reliable member of the S.M.S. Skull Squadron, operating the massive and heavily armed VB-6 König Monster. She provides crucial heavy firepower for the team, using her bomber to devastating effect in numerous engagements. In addition to her combat duties, she takes on a caretaker role for Ranka Lee after the young songstress loses her memory later in the series, using her medical expertise to tend to her. Her character undergoes subtle but significant development in her transition from a primarily supporting and combat-focused role to one where she actively defies military hierarchy. After Galaxy forces attempt a coup, she leaves her family safely within the fleet to join the S.M.S. deserters, fully committing herself to the fight. Her actions are pivotal in the final battle of the war, where she successfully uses her König Monster to blast the head off the Battle Galaxy, a key moment that helps secure victory for her allies.
Her notable abilities are twofold. As a pilot, she is highly skilled in operating the VB-6 König Monster, a powerful but unwieldy variable bomber, demonstrating exceptional control and combat effectiveness in a machine that requires great skill to handle. As a trained medical officer, her ability to provide on-site trauma care and medical expertise is a critical asset for the combat pilots of the S.M.S.. Her character was not originally part of the initial plans; the role of the König Monster pilot was intended for another character before being reworked into Canaria. In the compilation film Macross Frontier Movie: The Wings of Goodbye, she makes a cameo appearance cosplaying as Veffidas Feaze from the earlier Macross 7 series as part of the tribute band Lovely Bomber.
