Description
Itsuki Myōdōin, who transforms into Cure Sunshine, is a fourteen-year-old student at Myōdō Academy, where she serves as the student council president and is also the granddaughter of the academy's principal. Initially, she presents herself in a masculine manner, wearing the boys' school uniform and adopting boyish mannerisms. This outward presentation is a responsibility she has taken on to become the heir to her family's martial arts dojo, a role her chronically ill older brother, Satsuki, is unable to fulfill. Despite this princely and capable exterior, she has a deep fondness for traditionally feminine interests, such as cute dolls and fashion, though she initially suppresses these passions to maintain her public image.

Her personality is best described as calm, kind, and principled, with a formal and sometimes stern demeanor that has earned her widespread admiration from her peers. She is a natural leader, brave and compassionate, yet fully capable of fierce anger when innocent people are harmed. A significant part of her character arc involves reconciling the strong, responsible heir she feels she must be with the side of her that enjoys cute and girly things. This internal conflict comes to a head when her Heart Flower, a peony symbolizing rebirth and a noble spirit, is stolen. After being saved by Cure Blossom, she begins to embrace her femininity, encouraged by her friends Tsubomi Hanasaki and Erika Kurumi. A pivotal moment occurs when she designs and wears a dress, and her brother Satsuki tells her it looks cute, helping her accept that her martial arts dedication and feminine interests can coexist.

Itsuki's primary motivation for becoming a Pretty Cure is her desire to protect her brother, Satsuki. She transforms into Cure Sunshine for the first time when she shields the fairy Potpourri from an enemy, declaring her resolve to become someone who protects others. Upon transforming, she chooses her own Cure name, inspired by the sunlight, a reference to her brother's past encouragement and the "light" kanji in her family name. As Cure Sunshine, her theme color is gold and her flower symbol is the sunflower. Her role within the Heartcatch Pretty Cure team is primarily defensive, utilizing powerful shield-based abilities, although she also possesses strong martial arts skills from her training. Her notable solo attacks include the Sunflower Aegis, a sunflower-shaped shield, the Sunshine Flash, a barrage of golden energy beams, and her finishing move, the Gold Forte Burst, performed with the Shiny Tambourine. She later achieves an upgraded form called Super Cure Sunshine after passing a trial that forces her to confront and accept her integrated self.

In terms of key relationships, her fairy partner is Potpourri, with whom she bonds over a shared desire to protect others. She develops deep friendships with her teammates Tsubomi and Erika, who encourage her self-acceptance, and with Yuri Tsukikage, who she initially finds distant but later trusts completely. Her relationship with her brother Satsuki remains a cornerstone of her character, as protecting him is her driving force. In the context of the Precure All-Stars movies, including DX3, she appears alongside the combined Pretty Cure teams, fighting in large-scale battles against powerful villains and cooperating with Cures from other generations, providing her characteristic defensive support and teamwork.
