Nanase Matsuura is a student at Mihoshi Academy in the Macross Frontier fleet, where she is a classmate of Alto Saotome, Michael Blanc, and Luca Angelloni. She also works part-time as a waitress at the Nyan-Nyan Chinese restaurant on Island 1. There, she becomes the best friend and coworker of Ranka Lee, and she wholeheartedly supports Ranka's dream of becoming a singer. Nanase is enrolled in the fine arts department and possesses natural artistic talent, particularly in drawing and painting. Her shy and quiet demeanor initially makes it difficult for her to open up to others, but she can display boldness and determination when making important decisions. As Ranka's career takes off, Nanase is hired by Grace O'Connor to serve as Ranka's costume designer, a role that draws on her creative abilities. During a Vajra attack within the fleet, Nanase sustains severe injuries, including a wound to her right eye. Sheryl Nome finds her and brings her to a shelter for medical attention, saving her life. Throughout the story, Nanase develops from a reserved background character into a more proactive supporter of her friend, using her artistic skills to contribute directly to Ranka's rise as a singer. Her loyalty and quiet courage define her arc within the series.
