Description
Makie Otono-Tachibana, born into a samurai family, faced disownment by her father Harukawa Yoshiaki after childhood events led to disgrace. As a child surrounded by wild dogs, her older brother failed to protect her, forcing Makie to defend them both with a bladed weapon, killing the animals. Public revelation of her superior inherited swordsmanship resulted in her brother's ritual suicide, prompting her father to cast out Makie and her mother. Her mother turned to prostitution, while Makie initially sought to restore family honor through swordsmanship.

Incapable of delivering killing blows due to hesitation in critical combat moments, Makie became a geisha and prostitute. Her cousin Anotsu Kagehisa, leader of the Ittō-ryū, later purchased her freedom. Though promising marriage, Anotsu treated her primarily as a soldier, their relationship defined by mutual yet unfulfilled love. Makie possessed extraordinary combat skill, acknowledged by Anotsu as his superior and the strongest member of the Ittō-ryū; he stated he could never match her ability regardless of training. Her weapon, Haru-no-Okina (Old Man of Spring), was a double-bladed three-section staff concealed within a hollowed shamisen.

Tasked by Anotsu to kill the immortal Manji, Makie engaged him in combat but failed to strike the final blow due to her hesitation. Following this, she distanced herself from Anotsu and the Ittō-ryū. After her father's humiliating death, she lived in isolation and attempted to disable her swordsmanship ability by binding her hand.

She rejoined Anotsu upon discerning his declining health, eliminating nearly all pursuers under Iriya who threatened him. After Iriya's demise, she traveled with Anotsu and Magatsu. During this time, she developed the same hereditary lung illness that killed her father, progressively weakening her. Though Anotsu left her behind to spare her the shogunate's final assault on the Ittō-ryū, she pursued him as her sickness worsened. She encountered Habaki Kagimura and the Rokki-dan, reuniting with Anotsu and Manji to fight alongside them.

Her combat prowess included superhuman physical traits, pseudo-precognition enabling prediction of opponents' moves through rapid analysis, and mastery of martial arts and swordsmanship. She demonstrated superhuman stamina, fighting effectively against adversaries like Manji and groups of soldiers even while ill, though her condition reduced her endurance. Her tactical ingenuity in battle was deemed unmatched. Key quotes reflect her internal conflicts, acknowledging perceived foolishness in life choices, admitting failure in "living, dying, killing, sparing, hating, forgiving," and expressing determination to "live this moment together" with renewed seriousness during her final battles.
