Description
Filia Ul Copt is a golden dragon who serves as a priestess to the Flarelord, the Fire Dragon King. Despite being a dragon, she is approximately three hundred years old, which is considered quite young for her long-lived race, as dragons can survive for over two thousand years. She has the ability to transform into a human form, which she maintains most of the time, but her transformation skills are imperfect; as a result, her dragon tail often appears involuntarily when she is surprised, angry, or emotionally agitated.
In her human guise, Filia appears as a young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes, standing 165 centimeters tall. She carries a large, heavy spiked mace as her primary weapon, which she can wield with surprising ease due to her retained dragon strength, even when in human form. Beyond combat, she has a refined appreciation for antiques, particularly pottery and teacups, and she enjoys brewing and drinking tea, often producing a full tea set seemingly from nowhere during quieter moments. Her personality is a mixture of warmth and volatility; she is generally kind-hearted and compassionate, but she has a quick temper that can flare up dramatically. She is also somewhat naive and unworldly at the start of her journey, as she was raised in isolation within the temple.
Filia is sent on a quest to find a powerful human who can help prevent a great catastrophe. Following a divine oracle, she first approaches Luna Inverse, a legendary knight, but Luna declines and directs Filia to her younger sister, the sorceress Lina Inverse. Though she is initially formal and duty-bound, traveling with Lina and her companions forces Filia to confront complexities and horrors she never imagined. Among the most jarring revelations is learning that her own race, the golden dragons, committed genocide against the ancient dragons, an act of brutality carried out in the name of protecting the world. This truth shatters her naive worldview and causes her immense guilt. It is a turning point for her character, leading her to defy the elders of her own temple and ultimately renounce her position as a priestess.
Her relationship with the mazoku priest Xellos is particularly fraught with tension. As a dragon priestess, Filia is highly sensitive to the presence of evil beings known as mazoku, and she instinctively despises Xellos. She is consistently rude to him, calling him insulting names, and she frequently threatens him with her mace. For his part, Xellos enjoys teasing her, knowing exactly how to provoke her anger. Despite this mutual antagonism, their relationship develops a degree of grudging respect and tolerance, and they ultimately find themselves fighting on the same side against a greater threat. In contrast, she forms a genuine friendship with Lina, even as they constantly bicker. She also shares a more serene bond with Zelgadiss, as both appreciate calm and artistic pursuits and often act as voices of reason against Lina's chaotic nature.
Filia feels profound sympathy for the antagonist Valgarv, an ancient dragon who survived the slaughter of his race by the golden dragons. She accepts his hatred and seeks to understand him, wishing for him to find peace. At the climax of the story, after Valgarv is destroyed while fused with an entity known as Dark Star, he is reborn as a pure ancient dragon in the form of an egg. Filia takes responsibility for the past sins of her people by choosing to raise the reborn Valgarv. Following the final battle, she leaves her old life behind completely, even adopting two of Valgarv's former servants, and opens an antique shop in a human city, dedicating herself to a new path while caring for the young dragon.
