Description
Kagura is one of the main students in the story, though she initially appears only as a minor background figure in Minamo Kurosawa's class during the first year. Her role becomes prominent in the second year when Yukari Tanizaki selects her to join her class specifically to be a ringer, an athletic ace brought in to win the school sports competitions. This recruitment solidifies her as a core member of the main group of friends. Her full name is never revealed, a detail creator Kiyohiko Azuma chose to maintain for her character.

In terms of personality, Kagura is defined by her immense energy and her devotion to athletics, particularly as a member of the swim team. She shares a similar boundless enthusiasm and lack of interest in academic studies with her friend Tomo Takino, but she is not prone to Tomo's impulsive and irritating outbursts. Instead, she is fundamentally good-natured, sweet, and sensitive. She can be easily moved to tears, especially in emotional situations or when she feels she has let someone down, such as accidentally tackling the much smaller Chiyo Mihama during a sports festival. Her compassionate side is shown through actions like helping a foreigner carry his bags up a flight of stairs despite being unable to communicate with him, or chasing away cats that approach Sakaki to prevent her from being bitten.

Her low test scores and general apathy for schoolwork earn her a place in a group known as the Bonkuras or Knuckleheads, alongside Tomo and Ayumu Kasuga. While her academic performance is poor, her athletic prowess is exceptional. She is an all-around athlete, though swimming is her primary and best sport. Her dedication to the pool results in pronounced tan lines during the summer, a physical trait her friends often point out. Even within the Bonkura group, she stands out for her lack of common knowledge at times, once seriously asking friends if reindeer are real animals.

A central aspect of Kagura's character is her relationship with Sakaki. She develops a one-sided rivalry with the taller, also athletic girl, constantly trying to outdo her in everything from sprinting and softball to eating lunch. This rivalry was sparked when Sakaki unknowingly defeated her in a running event during their first-year field day. However, this competitive drive is paired with a genuine desire to be a good friend to Sakaki, and over time the two become close. Sakaki, a natural athlete, is largely oblivious to the rivalry and typically defeats Kagura in most physical competitions, though Kagura’s superior stamina, built from swimming, allows her to win in endurance events like long-distance running. Kagura shares another trait with her rival: both are embarrassed when Tomo publicly comments on the size of their large breasts.

Within the group, her key relationships include a deep respect for her former first-year teacher, Nyamo, whom she frequently calls coach and regards with near hero-worship. This respect is solidified during Nyamo's infamous adult lecture, of which Kagura is one of the biggest admirers. Her friendly bond with Tomo is based on their shared energy and academic struggles, though Kagura is notably more level-headed. At the same time, she can be frustrated with her friend, especially as Tomo sometimes mocks Kagura for her tan lines or inadvertently highlights her physical insecurities. She also displays moments of unexpected social awareness, such as being the only member of the group to worry about their friend Kaori when she gets placed in a different class.

Kagura's development throughout the story is subtle. She transitions from a background athlete in another class to a central figure in the main friend circle. Her relationship with Sakaki evolves from a purely competitive rivalry into a genuine friendship, though she never entirely gives up on trying to beat her. She matures from simply being an energetic jock to showing her sensitive, caring nature more openly. Her physical ability is her most notable trait, with her high stamina and proficiency in swimming being her key strengths. Her dedication to the swim team is a constant in her life, and her athletic build and short hair contribute to her image as a tomboy with a soft heart, a characterization that is reinforced by her lack of interest in traditionally girly activities at home. Standing at 156 centimeters tall during her second year, she is of average height among her friends.
