Description
The Going Merry is the first full-sized ship to carry the Straw Hat Pirates, serving as their home and primary mode of transportation from the East Blue through many of the early challenges of the Grand Line. The ship was a gift from a young woman named Kaya, given to the crew as thanks for defending Syrup Village from the Black Cat Pirates. Its designer was Kaya's loyal butler, Merry, and the ship's most distinctive feature is its sheep-shaped figurehead, which serves as a visual pun connecting to its creator. The figurehead also happens to be the favorite seat of the captain, Monkey D. Luffy.

Over time, the Going Merry became far more than a simple vessel. The crew added personal touches that made it their own, most notably three tangerine trees planted on deck as a reminder of Nami's hometown and her foster mother, Bell-mère. The ship's armament consisted of four cannons, though the Straw Hats rarely relied on them, preferring to engage enemies directly or flee from naval combat. Despite being an ordinary caravel-class ship not originally designed for the extreme dangers of the Grand Line, the Going Merry carried its crew through freezing climates, devastating battles, and even into the sky.

What truly elevates the Going Merry from a mere ship to a character in its own right is the manifestation of a Klabautermann. This water spirit, a figure from sailor legends, is said to inhabit a ship that has been deeply loved and cared for by its crew. The Klabautermann appears as a ghostly figure in a raincoat carrying a small hammer. During the crew's journey to the sky island of Skypiea, Usopp caught a glimpse of this spirit working through the night to repair the badly damaged ship. This miraculous self-repair allowed the Going Merry to continue its journey when it otherwise would have failed.

However, the cumulative damage from countless adventures proved too great. The ship suffered from being chopped, impaled, blown up, and even partially eaten by the pirate Wapol. After arriving at the shipbuilding island of Water 7, the crew received devastating news: the ship's keel, the central structural backbone comparable to a human spine, was broken beyond repair. This diagnosis forced Captain Luffy to make the painful decision to replace the Merry. The decision led to a severe conflict with Usopp, who treasured the ship more than anyone else given its connection to his childhood friend Kaya and his own role in its care. The emotional fallout resulted in a duel between captain and crewmate, with Usopp leaving the crew and keeping the damaged ship.

The Going Merry demonstrated its own will and devotion one final time. Despite being declared unseaworthy and set adrift, the ship sailed itself through a deadly tidal wave known as the Aqua Laguna to reach the besieged Straw Hats at Enies Lobby. Arriving as if by a miracle, the Merry carried the exhausted crew to safety, finally splitting in half from the strain. With its journey complete, the crew gave the Going Merry a traditional Viking funeral, setting it ablaze as it sank beneath the waves. In its final moments, the spirit of the ship spoke to the crew, expressing gratitude for the adventures they shared and happiness at having been their home, before disappearing into the sea. The Going Merry was later succeeded by a new vessel, the Thousand Sunny, built by the crew's shipwright Franky, who hoped to carry on the spirit of the beloved first ship.
