Taira no Chitose is the acknowledged Priestess of the Dragon God in the parallel world of Kyou, appointed by the retired emperor. She holds the specific role of Black Dragon Priestess (Kokuryū no Miko), embodying the yin aspect of the dragon god. As a Taira clan (Heike) princess, she is the younger sister of Taira no Katsuzane, one of the Eight Guardians.
Chitose inherited potent spiritual abilities from her mother, enabling her to hear supernatural thoughts and sounds. This power isolated her during childhood, intensified by her sheltered noble upbringing with no companions. At age seven, she psychically sensed trapped victims during a catastrophic fire in the capital’s slums, including her brother. Desperate, she prayed for intervention, and the Black Dragon answered by extinguishing the flames. Though survivors were saved, over half the slums burned and many perished. Noble indifference to the aftermath eroded the world’s balance, fueling Chitose’s despair. The Black Dragon then chose her as its priestess due to her spiritual gifts and desire to alter this fate.
Longing for companions like the White Dragon Priestess’s Eight Guardians, Chitose’s yearning inadvertently drew Fujiwara no Yukitaka to Kyou—though they never met. The Black Dragon subsequently manifested Shirin from the "Loophole of Time" as her aide.
Akram, a mysterious figure seeking the Black Dragon’s power, approached Chitose with a proposal: harness vengeful spirits to "save" Kyou by ending suffering through their combined energy. Trusting his knowledge of dragon gods and agreeable demeanor, Chitose collaborated with him and Shirin. For eight years, she summoned and sustained spirits from the retired emperor’s shrine, gaining renown as Kyou’s savior.
When Karin Takakura, the true White Dragon Priestess, arrived and purified spirits, Chitose viewed her as an interloper accelerating Kyou’s ruin. She rejected Karin’s overtures and revived spirits to maintain the negative energy balance. As Karin won the trust of the Four Gods and Eight Guardians, Chitose grew uneasy. Akram manipulated her into creating a time-stopping barrier using vengeful spirits and directional talismans, claiming it would grant Kyou respite. Instead, it blocked purification, intensified suffering, and triggered the catastrophic Night Parade of One Hundred Demons.
Witnessing Karin’s positive impact, Chitose’s resolve wavered. During secret dragon-god-orchestrated meetings, she confessed doubts about her methods and fears of loneliness. Though Karin proposed cooperation, Chitose clung to her path. In the final confrontation, Akram revealed his true intent and unleashed the Night Parade. As a giant vengeful spirit emerged uncontrollably from her blood, Chitose accepted responsibility and transferred her Black Dragon powers to Karin to aid Kyou’s salvation.
Post-cataclysm, Chitose survived with a renewed perspective. In an epilogue, she enjoys restored peace with her brother Katsuzane and anticipates a future playdate with Karin and Yukarihime, reflecting newfound hope. Karin’s third wish during the battle explicitly sought Chitose’s happiness, cementing their bond as precious friends.
