Description
Isara Gunther is a central character from the Valkyria Chronicles series, known for her role as the tank driver and mechanic for Squad 7 of the Gallian Militia. She is a teenage girl of Darcsen descent, a race that faces widespread and open discrimination across the continent of Europa. At sixteen years old and standing at 152.5cm tall, she has the short black hair and dark eyes that are characteristic physical traits of her people.
Isara's background is marked by both tragedy and the fortune of finding a loving family. She was born in the industrial city of Fouzen to a brilliant Darcsen inventor named Theimer. Soon after her birth, Isara lost both of her parents in an accident. Consequently, she was adopted by Belgen Gunther, her late father's best friend, and moved to the town of Bruhl. This made her the adopted younger sister of Welkin Gunther, the man who would become the leader of Squad 7. Her adoptive father, General Belgen Gunther, also passed away before the start of the war.
The core of Isara's personality is a calm, kind-hearted, and perpetually positive demeanor. Despite suffering frequent harassment and prejudice due to her Darcsen heritage from a young age, she never became depressed or complained about the unfairness of her situation. Instead, she remains proud of her identity. She firmly rejects the common prejudice surrounding the mythical "Darcsen Calamity," arguing that no evidence exists to substantiate the claim. While generally agreeable, she also possesses a stubborn side, never hesitating to speak in defense of her people even when it leads to heated arguments, a trait that her squadmate Largo notes makes her as stubborn as the openly hostile Rosie. Deep down, she admits to being accustomed to the racism but holds a steadfast hope for a future where Darcsens can rejoin society as equals.
Isara's primary motivation is tied to her family and her passion for engineering. She deeply admires her biological father, Theimer, for his accomplishments as an inventor, which inspired her to follow the path of an engineer. She also holds immense gratitude and adoration for her adoptive brother, Welkin, who always protected her from persecution during their childhood. This devotion is so strong that she states she joined the militia specifically to fight alongside him. In the story, she serves as the talented mechanic and driver for the Edelweiss, the tank once owned by her adoptive father and now piloted by her brother. She maintains the tank and uses her skills to support Squad 7 in battle.
In terms of key relationships, her bond with Welkin is the most significant, built on mutual respect and care, with her nicknaming him "Welks". A more complicated and crucial relationship is with squadmate Brigitte "Rosie" Stark, who harbors a deep hatred for Darcsens. Despite their constant quarrels, Isara recognizes the kinder side within Rosie and makes consistent attempts to build a friendship with her. This relationship reaches a tragic turning point when Rosie finally accepts Isara as a true friend, only for Isara to be fatally wounded by an Imperial sniper at the Battle of Marberry Shore. Her death serves as a powerful catalyst, and the friendship they had just forged inspires Rosie's singing, which later sparks a post-war movement against Darcsen persecution.
Isara's notable abilities lie almost entirely in her mechanical and engineering prowess. A natural tinkerer, she earned several credentials in secondary military education before enlisting. She is a masterful engineer and mechanical designer, capable of maintaining and upgrading the Edelweiss and even offering specific, astute advice on improving others' weapons, such as Imca's lance, Var. Outside of combat, she spends her free time developing an airplane based on her late father's blueprints, dreaming of one day flying through the sky. Her talent is such that she is respected even by fellow engineers like Miles and Riley. Her development from a girl who quietly endures prejudice to a young woman whose actions and death help to bridge the divide of hatred is the most profound arc of her character.
