Description
Harriet Bartholomew, known to almost everyone as Hattie, is a central figure in the narrative. Born in the year 2046, she is a young girl who has endured profound tragedy. During the initial alien attacks on Earth in 2054, Hattie witnessed her parents being killed in a horrifying manner. The trauma from this event was so severe that she fell into a comatose state for over five years, and as a result, although her chronological age is thirteen, her mental development and emotional maturity are much closer to that of an eight-year-old child.
Following her recovery from the coma, Hattie went to live a secluded and peaceful life with her grandfather in the mountainous wilderness. There, surrounded by nature and accompanied by her large, fiercely protective pet dog named Walton, she embraced her grandfather's whimsical tales of elves and fairies. This innocent worldview became her primary lens for interpreting a world that had already shown her great cruelty. Her personality is defined by this gentle fragility and a trusting, almost childlike innocence. She is shy but innately hopeful, often retreating into her imagination to cope with frightening situations. Her fear of violence is so acute that the mere sound of gunfire can trigger a paralyzing neurotic panic attack, a stark reminder of the day she lost her parents.
Hattie's sheltered life changes forever when she encounters Frank, a massive, sentient metallic giant who had escaped from a secret research facility. Unaware of his dangerous nature or the chaos surrounding him, Hattie sees him not as a monster but as the embodiment of the fairies from her grandfather's stories, giving him the nickname Mister Elf. Remarkably, she discovers she is able to communicate with Frank telepathically and can even calm his more violent impulses with her gentle singing. This unique bond is later revealed to have a biological cause: tiny fragments of alien metal are embedded in her brain and body from the incident that killed her parents. These fragments are what allow her to connect with Frank on a unique wavelength, but they were also a contributing factor to her prolonged unconsciousness.
This connection makes her invaluable to the paramilitary organization FUNERAL, which is dedicated to fighting the alien threats. After a battle that results in the death of her grandfather, Hattie is taken in by the organization, effectively serving as a bridge between the humans and the powerful weapon they see in Frank. Her role in the story is that of a gentle intermediary, a non-combatant whose presence is strategically essential for controlling the entity that the organization codenames X-1. Her life at the FUNERAL base is initially difficult. She clashes sharply with the scarred and vengeful pilot Ryu Soma, who blames Frank for the death of his lover and sees Hattie only as a painful reminder of the woman he lost. Hattie, in turn, cannot understand his hatred for her beloved Mister Elf and refers to him as a bad fairy.
Despite a rocky start where she feels used and lonely, her situation begins to improve. The commander of FUNERAL, Lana Ines, recognizes Hattie's suffering and takes her into her own home, becoming a foster mother figure and providing the familial warmth Hattie desperately needs. Through this kindness, Hattie begins to heal and forms genuine bonds with the other members of FUNERAL, who grow to care for her beyond her utility as Frank's handler.
Throughout the series, Hattie's development is marked by a growing resilience. While she remains a pacifist at heart, she demonstrates considerable courage when motivated by love for her friends, showing a willingness to face danger to support Frank or the family she has found among the FUNERAL members. Her primary motivation is the preservation of her newfound family and the protection of Frank, her closest friend and protector. She does not possess any physical special abilities beyond those of an average child. Her sole, extraordinary capability is her telepathic communication with Frank, a byproduct of the alien fragments within her. In the final chapter of the story, Frank removes these fragments from her brain to complete his own transformation, severing their direct mental link but freeing her from that physical trace of her past trauma. Years later, Hattie has grown enough to become a crew member on the probe Ulysses, embarking on a mission into outer space and looking toward a hopeful future.
