Description
Berry is a character from the spin-off manga Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock, which was written and illustrated by Naho Ooishi. He is a young member of the Plantian race and the son of Ipana, the doctor of a small village on Planet Plant. The character design for Berry was provided by the original Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama.
In terms of background, Berry lives with his father on Planet Plant during an era long before the planet was renamed Planet Vegeta and colonized by the Saiyans. His everyday life is changed forever when his father discovers and heals an unconscious Saiyan warrior named Bardock. After Bardock eliminates two soldiers from the Frieza Force who were threatening the village, he retreats to a nearby cave to be alone.
Berry’s personality is defined by a mix of timidity and kindness. He is generally fearful of strangers and outsiders, which makes him initially cautious around the powerful Saiyan. Despite this shyness, he is a sweet and friendly child who demonstrates remarkable courage and compassion. He is the only villager who actively seeks to connect with Bardock, regularly bringing him baskets of food and medicine in the cave as a gesture of gratitude. Over time, his persistent kindness causes the gruff Bardock to gradually warm up to his company. Berry is also highly observant and perceptive for his age, noticing a crucial detail like blood on Chilled’s arm when the tyrant and his men attempt to deceive the village by disguising themselves as the Space Police.
Berry’s primary motivation throughout the story is the protection of his father, his fellow villagers, and his home. He acts as a bridge between the fearful populace and Bardock, sensing the danger posed by the newcomers and bravely running to the Saiyan’s cave to warn him. When Chilled and his soldiers begin to terrorize the planet, Berry tearfully begs Bardock to intervene and save his people.
His role in the narrative is that of a catalyst and a witness. He is the one who alerts Bardock to the immediate threat, prompting the Saiyan to take action. More significantly, Berry’s act of self-sacrifice serves as the emotional trigger for the story’s climax. When Chilled prepares to deliver a fatal energy blast to the wounded Bardock, Berry rushes forward in a desperate attempt to save him. Chilled redirects the attack, striking Berry instead and wounding him. Seeing this young, defenseless child get hurt while trying to protect him mirrors Bardock’s memories of his own crew’s senseless decimation by Frieza, igniting a furious rage that triggers his legendary transformation into a Super Saiyan for the first time.
Berry’s key relationships are central to the plot. His bond with his father, Ipana, is clearly a close and loving one, as he is deeply afraid for Ipana’s safety during the attack. His most significant relationship is with Bardock. It evolves from fear and curiosity to a genuine, if unspoken, friendship. Berry is not afraid to approach Bardock when others keep their distance, and his simple, consistent acts of kindness are what ultimately connect with the Saiyan warrior’s hardened heart. In turn, Bardock’s fury at seeing Berry harmed shows that he has come to care for the child.
In terms of development, Berry’s character arc sees him overcome his natural timidity to perform acts of great bravery. He moves from being a frightened child who hides from danger to someone who actively investigates suspicious strangers, pleads for a hero to act, and finally throws himself into harm’s way to save a friend. After Chilled is defeated, Berry is shown to recover quickly from his wounds and is overjoyed to see that his father, the other villagers, and Bardock have all survived the ordeal.
Berry does not possess any notable combat abilities or special powers. His strengths lie in his emotional courage, his perceptiveness, and his capacity for kindness, which prove to be far more valuable than physical strength in the context of the story.
