Description
Kasane Kujiragi is a figure who operates from the shadows of Ikebukuro, first making a physical appearance as the quiet and composed secretary to the influential information broker, Jinnai Yodogiri. This position, however, is a carefully constructed facade. She is later revealed to be the true ringleader behind the organization that collectively uses the Yodogiri name, establishing her as a central antagonist in the narrative. Her youthful appearance and seemingly ageless nature are explained by her being a dhampyr, a being of mixed human and vampire heritage.
Background and Personality
Kujiragi's past is marked by transaction and obligation. She was born into the same family as the idol Ruri Hijiribe, being the half-sister of Ruri's mother. As an infant, she was sold to the original Jinnai Yodogiri to settle a family debt and was subsequently raised by him as his protégé. After his death, she perpetuated his identity and influence, using over twenty elderly men as decoys to play the role of Yodogiri while she, acting as his "secretary," pulled the strings from behind the scenes.
In person, Kujiragi is almost unnervingly stoic, rarely displaying emotion and maintaining a quiet, composed demeanor. Despite her skill at manipulation and orchestrating events from a distance, she is noted to be a terrible liar when speaking face-to-face. Her nature is viewed as a product of her unnatural upbringing. One observer describes her as a stark contrast to the naturally malicious Izaya Orihara, calling her "an evil made by humans" and a figure who is both a perpetrator and a victim of the circumstances that forged her.
Role and Motivations
Kujiragi's primary role in the story is as a manipulator and a power broker. For much of her life, her actions were defined by maintaining the legacy of Jinnai Yodogiri, a monotonous existence from which she is later freed by the machinations of Izaya Orihara. Her personal motivations stem from her identity as a non-human entity living among humans. She develops an interest in Shinra Kishitani after investigating the purported truth of his love for the headless Dullahan, Celty Sturluson. Skeptical that any human could truly love an aberration, Kujiragi's research proves her wrong, and she develops an unrequited crush on Shinra, hoping that he might also accept a monster like herself. She also harbors a deep-seated envy towards Ruri Hijiribe, her own relative, who is able to chase her dreams and live a normal, brilliant life despite sharing the same non-human blood, though this envy does not reach the point of hatred.
Key Relationships
Her relationship with Shinra Kishitani is particularly significant. She stabs him with her blade, making him a child of Saika, but is amazed when his powerful love for Celty allows him to overcome the curse. Her interactions with other characters are often transactional or antagonistic. She confronts Anri Sonohara, another wielder of Saika, in an attempt to buy the blade. She also directly clashes with Celty, at one point trapping her shadow form. Her relationship with the Yodogiri organization is one of inherited control; she manipulates the decoys and speaks of them as participants who engaged in questionable actions of their own free will.
Abilities
As a wielder of the cursed sword Saika, Kujiragi possesses several notable abilities. She is a skilled swordswoman and can enslave anyone she cuts, turning them into Saika's "children". Her eyes glow red when she actively wields the blade's power. More uniquely, she has mastered a technique she calls "Branching." This process involves breaking Saika's original form and using its fragments to smelt other bladed instruments, effectively creating new weapons imbued with Saika's enslaving properties. She demonstrates great skill in projecting multiple copies of Saika from her body, often shaping them into sharp metal wires that she can use to bind and cut enemies, or even to swing across the city. She also carries non-Saika tools, such as an electric glove used for incapacitating opponents.
