Description
"Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo" is a 25-episode anime series that blends elements of mecha, fantasy, and dystopian drama. The story is set in a world where humanity has achieved peace and prosperity by harnessing a magical energy source called Mana, which grants them advanced technology and the ability to suppress conflict. However, this utopia comes at a cost: those born without the ability to use Mana, known as Norma, are ostracized and deemed impure. Norma are exiled to isolated facilities, where they are forced to pilot mechanized weapons called Para-mails to fight against interdimensional dragons known as DRAGONs.
The protagonist, Angelise Ikaruga Misurugi, begins the story as a privileged princess of the Misurugi Empire, unaware of her true nature as a Norma. When her inability to use Mana is revealed, she is stripped of her title and sent to Arzenal, a remote military base where Norma are trained as soldiers. Initially resistant to her new reality, Angelise—now called Ange—struggles to adapt to the harsh conditions and the hostility of her fellow Norma. Over time, she develops resilience and forms bonds with her comrades, including Vivian, a cheerful but naive recruit, and Hilda, a tough and pragmatic soldier with a personal vendetta.
As Ange becomes more skilled in piloting Para-mails, she uncovers deeper secrets about the world she lives in. The DRAGONs, long believed to be mindless beasts, are revealed to be sentient beings from another dimension, and the war between humans and DRAGONs is far more complex than it appears. Ange also learns about the existence of a parallel world called Embryo, ruled by a mysterious figure known as the Embryo, who manipulates events across dimensions for his own purposes. The series explores themes of identity, oppression, and rebellion as Ange and her allies challenge the established order and fight for their freedom.
The narrative takes several twists as alliances shift and new threats emerge. Ange’s journey is marked by personal growth, as she transitions from a sheltered princess to a determined leader. The series also delves into the backstories of supporting characters, such as Tusk, a skilled mechanic and ally to Ange, and Salia, a rival Norma with her own ambitions. The final arc sees Ange and her comrades confronting the Embryo in a climactic battle that spans dimensions, culminating in a resolution that redefines the relationship between humans, Norma, and DRAGONs.
"Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo" combines action-packed mecha battles with a layered narrative that addresses societal issues and personal struggles. The series balances its darker themes with moments of camaraderie and humor, creating a dynamic and engaging story.
