Description
Julio Asuka Misurugi is the crown prince of the Misurugi Empire and the older brother of Angelise Ikaruga Misurugi, the series protagonist, as well as Sylvia Ikaruga Misurugi. He holds the rank of First Holy Emperor Julio I after orchestrating a coup d'état. His most significant act is publicly revealing Angelise's status as a Norma, a human unable to use the magical energy known as Mana, during her coming-of-age ceremony. This revelation is a calculated betrayal designed to strip his sister of her title, exile her to the island of Arzenal, and remove his parents from power.
Julio's personality is defined by arrogance, profound cruelty, and a cowardly nature that emerges when his plans fail. Although he acts with an outward appearance of a kind and easygoing brother, this facade conceals a deep-seated sadism and a grandiose sense of self-importance. His motivations are rooted in a toxic combination of jealousy and an inferiority complex. He grows to resent his younger sister not despite her being a Norma, but because he interprets his parents' efforts to hide her condition and protect her as favoritism. Believing that Angelise was being groomed for the throne that he considered his birthright, his bitterness festers into an obsessive hatred. He also shares the widespread societal prejudice of Mana-users, viewing all Norma not as humans but as filthy and expendable monsters.
In the story, Julio serves as a primary human antagonist and the catalyst for the protagonist's fall from grace. After usurping the throne and having his father executed, Julio's role evolves from securing his power to a vengeful pursuit of his sister. He manipulates their younger sister, Sylvia, by convincing her that Angelise is responsible for their mother's death, using her as a pawn to lure Angelise into a trap. When this execution attempt fails, his vendetta escalates into a genocidal rage. Misinterpreting the orders of the series' true antagonist, Embryo, Julio leads a massive military fleet to Arzenal with the explicit goal of slaughtering every Norma, including non-combatant children, to ensure his sister is killed.
Julio's key relationships are defined by manipulation and hatred. He shares a conspiratorial bond with his aide, Riza, who later influences and controls him. His relationship with his parents is one of resentment, viewing their strictness not as preparation for rule but as a lack of love compared to the treatment of Angelise. He ultimately has his father hanged for high treason. Regarding his two sisters, he views Angelise with a murderous jealousy and uses Sylvia as a brainwashed tool for his schemes, showing no genuine affection for either.
The character's development, or rather his descent, shows him moving from a scheming political usurper to a panicked and incompetent military commander. He becomes increasingly unhinged as his plans fail, culminating in the destruction of his flagship and his own death at the hands of Embryo. While attempting to beg his sister for mercy, he is eliminated not as an ally but as a failed pawn who disobeyed orders and proved to be of no further use. As a Mana-user, Julio possesses the Light of Mana, granting him the standard supernatural abilities of his society. He is also depicted as being technologically knowledgeable and a capable planner, even if his schemes ultimately rely on exploiting the emotional vulnerabilities of those around him.
