Description
Angelise Ikaruga Misurugi, who comes to be known as Ange, is the central protagonist of the narrative. Initially, she is the 16-year-old first princess of the Empire of Misurugi, a seemingly utopian society where humanity thrives using a magical technology called Mana. Born into the royal family, she was raised to believe she could use Mana, a fact hidden from her and the public by her family, who managed her environment to conceal her true nature as a Norma, an irregular being incapable of using Mana. This deception is shattered on the day of her coronation and baptism ritual, when her ambitious brother, Julio, publicly exposes her as a Norma. Stripped of her name, title, and all royal privileges, she is renamed Ange and exiled to the remote island of Arzenal, a military base where Norma are forced to fight for survival.
Ange's personality undergoes a profound and harrowing transformation throughout the story. As a princess, she was dignified, proud, and seen as a loving sister-figure to her peers, believing in equality for Mana-users while simultaneously viewing Norma as subhuman monsters who deserved to be quarantined. Upon her exile, she is initially unwilling to accept her identity as a Norma, clinging to her past privileges and treating the other Norma as things, which makes her deeply antisocial and proud. Her early days on Arzenal are brutal, involving forced medical procedures and witnessing the deaths of fellow riders, driving her psyche to the brink of despair. It is only her mother's dying words, urging her to "live on," that give her the will to survive. In a symbolic act of rejecting her former self, she ceremonially cuts her long hair short and adopts the hardened identity of Ange, vowing to kill in order to live. As Ange, she becomes calm, strong-willed, and often cruel, seeing herself as no longer human and referring to her comrades as insects. However, beneath this cold exterior, she still cares for others, a trait that slowly re-emerges as she forms bonds.
Her motivations shift dramatically over the course of the narrative. Initially, her sole goal is survival. After facing further discrimination and a public execution attempt by the Mana society she once loved, her motivation evolves into a burning desire for revenge and a vow to destroy the infuriating world that cast her out. Eventually, this matures into a commitment to create a new world where humans, Norma, and even their enemies, the DRAGONs, can coexist in peace.
Ange's role in the story is defined by her unique status as a Norma and her connection to a powerful Ragna-mail called the Villkiss. This is a special Para-mail, a humanoid robot used to fight interdimensional dragons, that originally belonged to Jill, the leader of Arzenal. Ange is the only person besides Jill who can pilot it, a feat made possible by a special ring given to her by her mother, which can activate and control the Villkiss remotely. Her abilities are considerable; she is a highly skilled Para-mail pilot with excellent physical capabilities, quickly mastering combat training and proving to be a talented soldier above average in all fields. Her fundamental power as a Norma is the ability to destroy and cancel all types of Mana.
Key relationships drive her development and reveal different facets of her character. Her loyal maid, Momoka Oginome, follows her into exile and remains a steadfast companion, though Ange initially rejects her by refusing to acknowledge her former name. Her relationship with Tusk, a young man she spends several days with on a deserted island, is pivotal, as it helps her begin to open up to others emotionally, and she eventually admits she is in love with him. Her relationship with her fellow Norma Hilda is complex, beginning with deep animosity as Hilda bullies her, but eventually evolving into a powerful bond of mutual understanding and trust. In a crucial moment before the final battle, Hilda confesses her feelings for Ange, calling her my prince. Ange accepts these feelings without judgment, kissing Hilda and affirming that she will need her in the new world. Ange also has a fraught relationship with her family; her brother Julio is the architect of her downfall, and her younger sister Sylvia ultimately betrays her, leading Ange to realize the hypocrisy of Mana society and chastise her own naive former self for believing in the peace it offered. She also comes into conflict with Embryo, the mastermind behind the world's order, who seeks to marry her and use her for his plans.
