TV-Series
Description
Chris is a supporting character in the television series Cross Ange, serving as a member of the First Troop of Norma soldiers on the island of Arzenal. She is a Norma, a type of human who cannot use the magical energy known as Mana and is consequently segregated from mainstream society. Within the military structure of Arzenal, Chris operates as a heavy artillery pilot, specifically assigned to the Para-mail unit, a type of transforming fighter used to combat interdimensional dragons. Her personal unit is the AW-ZZR520 (CR) Hauser Chris Custom.
On the surface, Chris presents the appearance of a shy and fragile individual, often speaking with a raspy and quiet voice. This initial impression is highly deceptive, as she possesses a sharp tongue and a major mean streak. When she feels betrayed or angered, her shy demeanor completely vanishes, replaced by a furious and vindictive nature. She can be quite perverted and has a negative disposition, often grumbling along with her close companions. Despite her prickly exterior, she is shown to be perceptive, being able to deduce the true feelings of others when her companions cannot. She is also vulnerable to feelings of abandonment, and the pain of being left behind by those she trusts is a primary motivator for her actions.
Her personal history and relationships are central to her character. Chris is almost always seen with her two fellow squad members, Hilda and Rosalie. The three shared a complex relationship with their former squad leader, Zola Axberg, engaging in a ménage à trois in Zola's quarters. When the protagonist, Ange, inadvertently causes Zola's death, Chris initially harbors a deep hatred for her. Believing Ange is directly responsible for the loss of her mentor and lover, Chris participates in bullying Ange constantly as a form of revenge. Her animosity is further fueled by jealousy, as Ange proves to be a highly effective dragon killer, earning more money for the unit than anyone else. However, after Ange saves the entire unit from a powerful dragon, Chris is one of the first to admit her mistake, reconciling with Ange and expressing a desire to befriend her.
Her most volatile relationship is with Hilda. When Hilda escapes from Arzenal, leaving Chris and Rosalie behind, Chris feels deeply wounded by what she perceives as a profound betrayal. Upon Hilda's return, Chris confronts her in prison. When Hilda coldly admits she never truly considered them friends and was merely playing along, a furious Chris spits in her face, declaring that Hilda should have died and that she now owns Zola's former room. Despite this conflict, she eventually forgives Hilda and follows her into battle when they join the resistance group Libertus.
Chris's role in the story evolves significantly during the attack on Arzenal. While trying to escape the battle and take off in her Para-mail, she is shot in the head, and her aircraft explodes, seemingly killing her. However, the enigmatic antagonist Embryo appears and uses his powers to revive her. Grateful and feeling abandoned by her former comrades who did not save her, Chris pledges her allegiance to Embryo. She is granted a new and more powerful machine, the Ragna-mail EM-CBX004 Theodra, and becomes one of his loyal Knights, fighting against her former friends. In this state, she resents Hilda and Rosalie, believing they willingly left her to die. Her character arc concludes when she reconciles with Rosalie after the final battle against Embryo, mending the bonds that were broken.
Regarding notable abilities, Chris is a competent pilot who survives numerous dangerous battles. As a Norma, her innate ability allows her to cancel and nullify the effects of Mana. After her revival, she gains the ability to pilot a powerful Ragna-mail, which signifies a step up in her combat capabilities compared to her standard custom Para-mail.
