Description
Embryo serves as the primary antagonist in the narrative, a figure who operates from a position far above the world's conventional rulers. His origins lie in a distant past, as he is an ancient researcher and geneticist who grew weary of humanity's constant warfare. To remedy this, he used his scientific knowledge to genetically modify humanity, creating the ability to use Mana, a powerful energy that grants wishes and brought about a new, seemingly peaceful civilization. However, he was unable to eliminate the genetic trait that produces Norma, individuals who cannot use Mana and instead disrupt its fields. To protect his created order, he declared Norma to be violent aberrations, making them scapegoats and subjecting them to severe discrimination. He is thus the shadowy creator of the World of Mana, having rebuilt human society from the ashes of the old world, and continues to control it from behind the scenes.

Embryo's personality is defined by a profound arrogance, a manipulative nature, and what can be described as a god complex. He believes he has the right to decide how the world should function and that all beings should adhere to his master plan. Despite being potentially the oldest character in the series, he maintains a youthful appearance. He is unflappable and speaks with complete confidence, referring to himself as a Tuner, a being who adjusts reality to his liking. His demeanor is often one of cruel playfulness, as he takes pleasure in the challenges posed by those who resist him, such as the protagonist Ange. When his plans are foiled, he reacts not with anger but with joy at the prospect of a more interesting struggle.

Embryo's primary motivation shifts over the course of the story. After deeming the World of Mana a failure, he decides to destroy it and create a new, ideal world. To achieve this, he plans to forcibly merge the human world with the world of the Dragons, a dimension inhabited by ancient humans, and use the immense energy of Aura, a captive dragon, to power this rebirth. His desire for a new world is accompanied by a personal obsession with Ange. He views her as a unique being who has defied his control and seeks to make her his wife and the new world's matriarch, attempting to break her spirit through manipulation, psychological torture, and physical assault when she refuses.

In the story, Embryo is the ultimate cause of almost all the suffering and conflict. His machinations are responsible for the persecution of Norma, the existence of the penal military colony where they are forced to fight, and the deaths of countless characters. He kidnaps Aura to use as a living power source, kills many ancient humans, manipulates and abuses the resistance leader Jill before abandoning her, and is indirectly responsible for murders like that of Ange's brother. He even resurrects dead characters like Chris and the orphaned children Ersha cared for, not out of benevolence, but to manipulate them into serving him, later coldly refusing to resurrect them again when they no longer suit his plans.

His key relationships are defined by control and obsession. He has a deep hatred for Tusk, the son of ancient humans he killed, viewing him as a rival for Ange's affection and repeatedly trying to eliminate him. His relationship with Jill is one of past manipulation, having seduced and then betrayed her, leaving her physically and emotionally scarred. He draws other characters to his side by promising to fulfill their desires, such as giving Salia the recognition she craves, providing Chris with a sense of belonging, and allowing Ersha to care for the revived children, only to discard them when it is convenient.

A significant revelation contributes to Embryo's development as a character. It is ultimately disclosed that his true, physical form is not the suave human-appearing figure he projects, but rather the Hysterica, a powerful black Ragnamail, or ancient mecha, that he pilots. This machine, whose name is derived from the word for a "pain from the womb," serves as his real body, highlighting his inhuman and parasitic nature.

Embryo possesses a wide array of notable abilities that solidify his god-like status. As a brilliant researcher and geneticist, he created the entire Mana system. He is effectively immortal, surviving multiple assassination attempts, and can use the Light of Mana in ways that affect even Norma, who normally repel it. He can communicate through realistic holograms and can use these projections to channel his powers. He also has a specific ability to induce either intense pleasure or excruciating pain by touching pressure points on a person's head, a method he uses to psychologically break his victims. Despite his immense power and control over the world and advanced Ragna-mail, his personal piloting skills are notably lacking, suggesting his power relies more on his strategic and scientific genius than on direct combat prowess.
