Description
Al is the main protagonist of the anime adaptation of MapleStory. His background is deeply tied to the fractured world he inhabits. He is the son of a renowned warrior named Grande. Ten years before the story begins, the World Tree, which maintained peace, was destroyed, leading the other races to falsely blame humanity for the catastrophe. As a result, humans are considered enemies by most non-human races. To survive and move freely in this hostile environment, Al chooses to dress in a monster costume, concealing his true identity as a human, which is eventually revealed to his companions near the end of the fourth episode.
In terms of personality, Al is defined by an unyielding and persistent nature. He possesses a never-give-up spirit and an always-trying attitude that drives his actions. He can be quite stubborn, but this determination is balanced by a strong sense of loyalty, as he is willing to do whatever is necessary to protect his family and friends. Despite his good heart, his trusting nature makes him somewhat gullible, a trait that other characters like Nina and Anji note as they are able to lie to or trick him with relative ease. Al is also dedicated to self-improvement, often engaging in what seems like random training; a common sight is him carrying a heavy stone as he travels, showcasing his commitment to building his strength.
Al's primary motivation is a grand and noble quest. He is determined to revive the World Tree, believing that its restoration will bring peace and mend the rifts between the warring races. This goal sets him on a journey to find the seeds of the World Tree, a quest that brings him into direct conflict with the Black Wings, an evil organization that seeks the seeds for themselves to dominate the world.
Throughout the story, Al forms key relationships that shape his journey. His primary companions include Nina, a powerful and somewhat conceited magician who is initially reluctant to trust him but eventually grows to accept him as a friend. Despite her pride, she becomes protective of their bond. Another companion is Anji, a thief who, like Nina, finds Al easy to deceive. Al also seeks guidance from seasoned warriors, occasionally asking masters like Barrow or Gallus to take him on as a student, even though he is unable to defeat their disciples. Despite his failures, these masters see him as an intriguing individual with potential.
Al undergoes notable development throughout the series, particularly in his capabilities and acceptance. While he begins his adventure wielding a simple wooden sword he carries on his back, he eventually arms himself with a more significant weapon: the Hero's Gladius. This blade originally belonged to his father, Grande, and holds a hidden power of light and purification that only Al and his father can channel. Acquiring this weapon marks a major step in his growth from a disguised, wandering boy to a hero capable of facing the Black Wings. His notable abilities are rooted in his physical training and his inherited potential. Beyond his great stamina and stubborn resilience demonstrated by his heavy lifting, his primary skill lies in swordsmanship. His true potential, however, is unlocked through his bloodline, allowing him to wield the Hero's Gladius and its unique power of light, making him a key figure in the fight against the forces that threaten the world.
