Description
"Betterman" is a 26-episode anime series that blends elements of science fiction, psychological horror, and mecha. The story is set in a near-future world where humanity faces existential threats from mysterious phenomena known as "Alterations," which cause bizarre mutations and psychological disturbances. These events are linked to a mysterious entity called "Betterman," a bio-mechanical being with ambiguous motives.

The protagonist, Keita Aono, is a young engineer working for the Neuron Corporation, a company specializing in advanced robotics and neural technology. Keita becomes entangled in the unfolding crisis when his childhood friend, Hinoki Sai, is affected by an Alteration. Hinoki's condition worsens, leading Keita to seek answers about the nature of these phenomena and the role of Betterman. Along the way, Keita encounters a group of scientists and pilots who operate advanced mecha called "Akamatsu Units," designed to combat the Altered creatures.

As the series progresses, it is revealed that Betterman is connected to a larger conspiracy involving the evolution of humanity and the emergence of a new form of consciousness. The narrative explores themes of human identity, the boundaries between organic and artificial life, and the ethical implications of technological advancement. Key characters include Lamia, a mysterious girl with a deep connection to Betterman, and Sakura, a scientist who provides critical insights into the Altered phenomena.

The plot intertwines personal struggles with broader existential questions, as Keita and his allies confront both external threats and internal conflicts. The series builds toward a climactic revelation about the true nature of Betterman and its relationship to humanity's future. Through its intricate storyline and exploration of complex themes, "Betterman" offers a thought-provoking narrative that challenges conventional notions of life, consciousness, and evolution.

The Akamatsu Industries team navigates a series of trap-filled rooms and reaches Dr. Mamon. Dr. Mamon waits for them in the final chamber. He reveals why he has pursued Kaede for the Superhuman Federation. Kaede serves as the final component required to unleash Brahman,a creature Dr. Mamon claims will advance the human race. The mysterious figure who previously aided the group against the worm attack intervenes. The team identifies this figure as Priest Yakusugi, the most powerful human alive. Brahman overpowers Yakusugi and throws him through a wall during a fight above the Superhuman Federation building. Lord Pakila, the most powerful of the Somnium race to which Betterman belongs, enters the battle and ties Brahman into knots. Dr. Mamon retreats with Kaede through an unused subway tunnel toward the abandoned city center. Keita, Hinoki, Yamajii, and Li-Chan arrive with their neuronoids and continue the pursuit. The team must catch Dr. Mamon before he completes his plan with Kaede as the final piece.
22Life
Dr. Mamon unleashes Brahman but his plan falters. He retains control over Kaede and retreats to the city's uninhabited center. Lord Pakila destroys Mamon's creation, but Kankel, a being hunting Somniums, kills him. The Akamatsu Industries team locates Kaede, who has freed herself. Before escaping, she assists Dr. Mamon in transforming himself into a second, more powerful Brahman. Priest Yakusugi arrives to confront the threat. He falls in battle after spending 120 years traveling the world to root out evil. The team proceeds to an abandoned underground factory. Yakusugi's violent clash with Brahman collapses the earth beneath the factory. Keita suffers a nervous breakdown while piloting the Kakuseijin. Brahman spots the team and launches a devastating attack. Keita regains composure and delivers his most effective combat performance yet, defeating Brahman. Additional neuronoids arrive via ModeWarp but turn against the personnel they were meant to assist. Betterman intervenes directly. Kankel follows close behind, and the ensuing clash results in the death of another Somnium.
23Offering
The Akamatsu Industries team gathers for a Christmas party, celebrating their survival through recent battles. Keita had previously defeated Brahman, but four ModeWarp neuronoids turned against the team during the rescue operation. Betterman dispatched those neuronoids, only to face Kankel, a more dangerous opponent who had slain the Somniums. Seeme, Betterman's advisor, sacrificed herself to give Betterman time to mutate into his Aqua form. Betterman's Aqua form washed the entire team to safety several weeks before the Christmas party. At the party, Kaede and Yanagi make a special announcement that lifts the group's spirits further. Keita convinces Hinoki to accompany him to his house while his parents remain away. Inside his bedroom, Keita attempts to kiss Hinoki. The sudden advance frightens Hinoki, sending her fleeing down the stairs and out of the house. She runs directly into the arms of a familiar and dangerous enemy.
24Departure
A Christmas celebration at Akamatsu Industries allows the team a rare night of leisure and fun. Most members sleep off a hangover from the previous night's party. Dr. Mamon, disguised as a masked man, approaches Keita's house and takes Hinoki. The team had believed Dr. Mamon died when Keita fought him in the form of Brahman. Betterman confronts the villain but cannot prevent the abduction. Keita takes the loss especially hard, having recently sworn to Hinoki that he would never leave her side. Sakura uses her abilities to track Hinoki to a diamond-shaped island. The island houses the ModeWarp headquarters, which has lost all contact with the outside due to the Algernon virus spreading through the facility. ModeWarp's parent company orders the destruction of the infected compound. The United Nations will commence a bombing raid in eight hours, leaving the team a narrow window for rescue. The team arrives to find ModeWarp in ruins and completely deserted except for twelve battle robots identical to ones they previously fought. The Algernon virus has already affected one of their own, reducing available forces for the coming battle.
25Memory
The Akamatsu Industries team arrives at ModeWarp headquarters searching for Hinoki and finds twelve hostile robots blocking their path. Enemy robots surround and shoot down the neuronoid carrying Keita,Sakura, and Mr. Akamatsu. Yanagi, Kaede, and Miyako defeat what they believe to be all the machines, but one remaining robot separates Miyako from the others and sends her plunging down a deep shaft. After the group destroys the final robot, Kaede begins laughing uncontrollably, a symptom of Algernon infection. She detonates an explosion that destroys her neuronoid, killing Yanagi, herself, and their unborn child. Keita survives the earlier crash and regains consciousness in a pool of linker gel at the bottom of ModeWarp headquarters. He sees Hinoki lying motionless on a table a few feet away. Dr. Mamon emerges from behind Hinoki before Keita can reach her. Betterman appears shortly after Mamon's entrance. Mamon reveals he needs Betterman to continue research started seven years earlier by ModeWarp's parent company, an experiment aiming to create the perfect human. Mamon transforms into Brahman, drawing power from the surrounding linker gel. Even Betterman's Seed of Nebula may not overcome this transformed enemy, forcing Betterman to fight an opponent empowered by the same substance that sustains him.
26Nothingness
Mamon Mugito evolves into Brahman and requires Hinoki's genetic material to complete his transformation into a perfect being. Betterman arrives to save Hinoki, allowing Mamon to proceed with his fiendish plan. Brahman draws its energy directly from the surrounding linker gel, making it nearly invulnerable to direct attacks. Betterman shifts his strategy and focuses his assault on evaporating the linker gel energy source. With the gel dissipated, Brahman becomes vulnerable and is destroyed with relatively little difficulty. Following the battle, Kankel appears once again, intent on exterminating the last surviving Somniums. Unlike their previous encounter, Seeme is no longer present to sacrifice herself for Betterman's survival. Betterman suffers a critical, likely fatal injury while fighting Kankel. Keita pilots the Neuronoid in a desperate attempt to destroy Kankel, but the creature brushes the mech aside with ease. The Neuronoid crashes into the ocean, leaving Keita floating unconscious just out of Hinoki's reach. Shigeru Akamatsu struggles to activate Miyako's crashed Neuronoid so he and Sakura can escape before the United Nations bombing begins. Miyako survives the crash, but the revelation of Algernon's true origin awaits her. The episode closes with multiple characters clinging to life and Kankel poised to destroy the remnants of humanity.
