TV-Series
Description
Born in autumn 1989, Hinoki Sai is the daughter of university professors and renowned paleontologists Mikio Sai and Yuriko Sai, with an older brother named Mario Sai. A 2002 expedition to India's Ajanta Caves ended in tragedy when her parents and brother vanished, presumed dead. This loss orphaned Hinoki, leaving deep emotional scars that manifested as prolonged depression and diminished self-esteem.
Hinoki possesses innate psychic abilities inherited from her father. Following her family's disappearance, she was recruited as a Head Diver by Akamatsu Industries and Mode Warp, organizations combating the Algernon phenomenon. Transferring to Kamome High School in 2006, her reserved demeanor and coping struggles made social integration difficult, though she remained popular among classmates.
Her Head Diver role involved piloting neuronoid mecha units from the Kakuseijin series. Initially assigned to Kakuseijin 01 with partner Cactus Prickle, his disappearance during an incident at the underground amusement park "Bottom the World" led to an unexpected reunion. Her childhood friend Keita Aono accidentally entered the cockpit, becoming her new co-pilot. Their partnership required synchronization as Dual Kinds, utilizing Synapse Dangeki particles for combat.
Hinoki exhibits a sullen exterior marked by self-deprecation, frequently deflecting questions with her catchphrase about lacking intelligence—a phrase echoing her brother Mario's final affectionate words. Despite outward apathy toward Keita's romantic advances, she harbors deeper feelings, referring to him as "Kei-chan" and displaying subtle jealousy during his interactions with other women. Her emotional armor gradually softens through her bond with Keita, signaling slow recovery from trauma.
A significant figure is Lamia, a Betterman resembling her deceased brother Mario who shows protective focus toward her. This connection stems from Lamia consuming a Vivele Fruit that grew from Mario's remains, inheriting his memories and traits. Lamia's actions are partly motivated by the belief Hinoki might produce such a fruit.
Later, Hinoki transitions to pilot Kakuseijin No. 02 and eventually becomes a pilot of the Final GaoGaiGar. Her experiences include being targeted by antagonist Mamon, who captured her as bait to lure Betterman, forcing her into a Damsel in Distress role near the series' conclusion.
Beyond Keita and Lamia, Hinoki maintains connections with GGG Blue operators Tamara Gogol and Hana Hatsuno—the latter met at Bottom the World. Her involvement in the shared continuity with *The King of Braves GaoGaiGar* is further explored in expanded media, including the novel series *King of Kings: GaoGaiGar VS Betterman*, detailing overlapping events between both series.
