Kikuko Inoue
Description
Kikuko Inoue is a highly respected Japanese voice actress, singer, and narrator with a career spanning over three decades. Born on September 25, 1964, in Kanagawa Prefecture, she initially pursued a different path, earning teaching licenses for junior high school Japanese and library science before a re-broadcast of the anime Attack No. 1 inspired her to enter the voice acting industry. She made her debut in 1988 and quickly gained prominence.
Inoue is renowned for her warm, dignified, and gentle vocal quality, which has led her to be frequently cast as "perfect girlfriend," maternal, or older sister-type characters. This typecasting was solidified by two of her most iconic early roles: the kind-hearted and domestic Kasumi Tendo in Ranma ½, which earned her the enduring nickname "Onee-chan" (big sister), and the compassionate goddess Belldandy in Ah! My Goddess, a character whose manga design was later influenced by Inoue's portrayal. Her filmography is extensive, demonstrating a versatility that extends far beyond these archetypes. She has convincingly portrayed a wide range of characters, from the sultry and villainous Lust in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and the commanding, tragic figure of The Boss in Metal Gear Solid 3, to the energetic boy Tsubasa Oozora in Captain Tsubasa. In the 2020s alone, her prolific output includes roles such as the Divine Voice in So I'm a Spider, So What?, Taira no Tokiko in The Heike Story, Shūko Komi in Komi Can't Communicate, Mirellia Q. Melromarc in The Rising of The Shield Hero, and Macrophage in Cells at Work!.
Beyond her character work, Inoue is famous for her playful public persona. Since 1998, she has humorously introduced herself as being "17 years old," a running gag that led to her being regarded as the founder and leader of the informal "17-Year-Old Club" within the industry. This quirk is often met with affectionate audience rejoinders of "Oi, oi!". Her long-standing friendship with fellow voice actress Noriko Hidaka, with whom she worked on Ranma ½, is also well-known; Hidaka is credited with giving Inoue the nickname "Mambo" (sunfish), which Inoue adopted as a personal trademark.
Inoue's talent and contributions have been recognized with major industry awards. She won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 4th Seiyu Awards in 2010. In 2016, she received the Kazue Takahashi Award at the 10th Seiyu Awards, an honor given to a female performer who broadens the profession of voice acting across all forms of media. The year 2018 marked her 30th anniversary as a voice actress.
In addition to her performance work, Inoue is also an entrepreneur. After working as a freelancer for a decade following her time with Mausu Promotion, she co-founded and manages her own voice acting agency, Office Anemone, with her sister, who serves as the agency's representative. Her daughter, Honoka Inoue, is also a voice actress and singer, and they share the same agency.
Inoue is also an accomplished singer with a substantial discography, including numerous solo albums, singles, and over 200 character songs. She has been part of the singing groups DoCo and Goddess Family Club, and in 2007, she formed the musical unit Wild Strawberry. Her creative output reflects a lifelong passion for music that predates her voice acting career.
