TV-Series
Description
Melinda Desmond is the wife of Donovan Desmond, the enigmatic former prime minister of Ostania, and the mother of their two sons, Demetrius and Damian. She serves as the chairwoman of the Lady Patriots Society, an exclusive group for women from elite families in Berlint.
Physically, Melinda is a middle-aged woman with fair skin, dark brown hair, and hazel eyes that have a distinct, slightly drooping shape with prominent lower eyelashes. She typically wears elegant attire, including dangling triangular earrings, and when she wishes to move about unnoticed, she adopts a casual disguise consisting of a bandana, sunglasses, and a simple dress.
On the surface, Melinda presents herself as an energetic, generous, and friendly individual. She is impulsive and quick to act on her whims, such as when she bought an excessive number of cake boxes and then, after being rescued by Yor Forger, immediately recruited her to play on her volleyball team. She does not seem to place great importance on social status and expressed a desire to build a genuine friendship with Yor, free from the preconceptions associated with being a former first lady.
However, this outgoing persona conceals a deeply troubled and contradictory inner world. Melinda is effectively estranged from her husband, from whom she lives separately after he withdrew from public life and became a recluse. The psychological strain of her position during and after the war led her to seek psychiatric help in the past. Her most defining characteristic is the intense fear and disdain she harbors for Donovan. A rare family dinner revealed her to be visibly uneasy and terrified in his presence, avoiding his gaze and barely touching her meal. This fear has manifested in a bizarre but strongly held belief that her husband was abducted and replaced by an alien being capable of reading minds, a notion she also shares with her eldest son, Demetrius.
This fear extends to and complicates her relationship with her younger son, Damian. While she maintains a public image of a hands-off parenting style similar to her husband, her private feelings are a chaotic mix of motherly affection and disturbing contempt. When Damian was rescued from a bus hijacking, Melinda rushed to his side, hugged him, and expressed genuine relief and worry. Yet, the moment Damian mentioned his father, her thoughts instantly shifted to resentment, referring to Donovan as that man and wishing her son would disappear, even as she simultaneously thought of him as her treasure. This inner conflict suggests a woman whose maternal love is poisoned by her fear of the family patriarch, making her unable to form a stable, healthy connection with her child. She has even avoided Damian, feeling she is a worthless and cowardly mother who is powerless to protect him from his father.
Despite her turmoil, Melinda maintains a few key relationships. Her bond with Yor Forger is significant and appears to be a source of genuine warmth. After Yor saved her from a fall, Melinda actively sought her friendship, appreciating her sincerity and lack of pretense. She has shown a willingness to be vulnerable with Yor, confiding in her about her secret hobby of fortune-telling and following her advice to seek a consultation at Berlint General Hospital. Her interest in the occult, including fortune-telling and supernatural phenomena like telepathy and UFOs, seems to function as an escape mechanism from her oppressive reality. She secretly works as a fortune teller under the alias Lunaluna☽Selena at local festivals. This secret hobby is one of her few outlets for personal expression and a way to connect with others, like Anya, who visited her booth seeking advice on befriending Damian. Through her sessions with Loid Forger, who is acting as a psychiatrist, Melinda has begun to address her trauma and fear, marking the beginning of a slow and painful personal development as she grapples with her family's dark secrets and her own fragile mental state.
