Description
Branwen is a character from the anime Queen's Blade Rebellion, known as the Captured Dragon Warrior. She is a Dragon Descendant, one of the most noble and rare beings on the continent, also referred to as a Holy Dragon Warrior for serving the dragons in ancient times. Her background is steeped in a proud lineage, and she was once a magnificent sight, riding through the sky on her partner, a dragon mount named Usher. However, her circumstances have drastically changed, and she has been forced into the life of a gladiator slave.
Her personality is cool, collected, and proud, a reflection of her noble heritage, but beneath this exterior, she possesses a gentle and friendly nature. In the past, when interaction between dragons and humans was rare, she would occasionally serve as a mediator between the two races. This core of dignity is her most defining trait, as she clings to the pride of her lineage to survive her current ordeal. Her master is a goblin slave trader and trainer named Dogura, who captured her by taking Usher hostage. To protect her dragon's life, Branwen is forced to fight to the death repeatedly in the Swamp Witch's arena against other slaves and monsters. Dogura is cruel and manipulative, seeking only cheap prestige, wine, and the praise of the Swamp Witch. He deliberately weakens Branwen by providing her with a rusted sword and an old shield for weapons. Furthermore, he uses a special device integrated into her leather outfit that can vibrate on command to break her concentration and reduce her combat effectiveness at critical moments. Despite these handicaps, her natural strength as a Dragon Descendant is immense, and she often overwhelms her opponents, forcing Dogura to rely on these cruel tactics to create a fair fight.
Branwen's role in the story is primarily that of a tragic, powerful warrior trapped in a cycle of exploitation. Her motivation is not glory or victory, but the survival of her beloved dragon, Usher. This hostage situation creates a vicious circle; she has more than enough power to shatter her chains and free herself instantly, but her warrior's pride and her love for her partner prevent her from doing so, as it would mean sacrificing him. Her key relationships are defined by this captivity. Her bond with her dragon, Usher, is her greatest weakness and her sole reason for enduring her suffering. Her relationship with Dogura is one of absolute loathing, as he constantly mocks her, tortures her, and attempts to break her spirit by forcing her to fight while humiliated.
Throughout the narrative of Rebellion, Branwen undergoes notable development through her encounters with other fighters. When she faces the protagonist Annelotte in the arena, she is struck by Annelotte's fierce determination and asks her why she fights so desperately. Hearing Annelotte's answer causes Branwen to reflect on her own situation. Later, she has a similar encounter with Luna Luna, who gives the same answer, prompting Branwen to smile and remember Annelotte's will. These interactions plant a seed of hope in her heart. An encounter with the warrior Tomoe further explores this, as Tomoe insists that hope exists, causing Branwen to hesitate and ultimately lose the fight. This suggests a gradual shift within her, a growing internal conflict between her conditioned despair and the possibility of freedom.
In terms of abilities, Branwen possesses the immense power of a Dragon Descendant. She fights with a sword and shield, even if they are deliberately rusted and inferior. When her anger reaches its peak and she can no longer suppress the power within, she transforms into a malevolent dragon warrior, losing control and pulverizing every enemy before her. Despite her physical strength, her captivity imposes artificial limitations; she is vulnerable to electrical shocks administered by Dogura through her collar, and the vibrating device in her clothing is used to break her focus. Her fighting style is aggressive, and she is known for a technique called Shackle Kick, which can knock down an opponent regardless of their defensive actions.
