Description
Sakura Saginomiya is the second-in-command of the 801st Tactical Training Squadron, first appearing when she transports new recruit Takuya Isurugi to headquarters. Generally mild-mannered, optimistic, and easygoing, she reacts fiercely if anyone mocks her beloved elderly dog, Patriot. She channels her enthusiasm into two pursuits: karaoke singing and gambling. Despite her squadron mates finding her singing voice unpleasant and avoiding her performances, she adores karaoke. Her compulsive gambling extends to nearly any activity, from flight exams to food contests and horse racing. She displays significant skill, often winning large sums, and strictly adheres to the principle that gambling debts are debts of honor, insisting on collecting winnings regardless of a formal agreement.

Recognized earlier in her career as a top emerging female pilot, Sakura's exceptional skills contributed to the 801st's formation, which also sparked jealousy among peers. During flight training, she became romantically involved with Toshimitsu Tokaji, the best friend of squadron captain Mitsuru Konishi. Both Konishi and Tokaji harbored feelings for her, though she focused solely on Tokaji at the time. On her flight exam day, Tokaji promised to attend but was distracted by jealous women. Konishi subsequently proposed, presenting a ring. Mistaking Konishi for Tokaji in her excitement, she uttered Tokaji's name. Konishi then claimed he was delivering the ring on Tokaji's behalf. Unaware of Konishi's true role, Sakura accepted the ring and continues to wear it, believing it came from Tokaji. Years later, she learns Konishi was the actual proposer. While never explicitly stated, strong implications exist that she reciprocates Konishi's feelings, particularly in later interactions.

Her relationship with Konishi remains positive, rooted in their shared history as flight academy classmates. She understands his personality well and collaborates with him on various squadron activities, including racetrack betting schemes. She does not view the squadron's hardships as particularly concerning. Her role within the squadron and core personality traits remain consistent.
