Description
Catherine Flaubert is a supporting character in the anime Gad Guard. Her background begins with her hiring the Hachisuka Express delivery service to bring her a mysterious and sought-after object known as a Gad. Before she could receive the item, an impostor named Wanda Woman impersonated her and tricked Hajiki, a courier for the service, into giving the Gad to her at Catherine's own apartment while Catherine was not home. As a result of this deception, Catherine lost the Gad, and it later became bonded to another person, transforming into a giant robotic entity called Lightning, making it unusable for her.
Catherine's personality is notably eccentric and persistent. Her behavior is driven by a singular, though never fully explained, motivation. She states that a Gad stole her real name and that she needs to obtain another one to get it back. This cryptic goal fuels her relentless determination. Even though she never acquires a Gad for herself throughout the series, she refuses to leave Hachisuka, the owner of the delivery service, or Hajiki alone. She holds them responsible for the loss of her original Gad and insists they are indebted to her for the money she paid for its delivery, as well as additional compensation for the damages she suffered.
In the story, Catherine serves as a persistent nuisance and a comedic driving force. She leverages her perceived debt to force Hachisuka, Hajiki, and their friends into an exhaustive search for Gads across the planet. To further her goal, she even attempts to hire Katana, another character, to assist in her quest. Her central role is that of a demanding and eccentric client who constantly reminds the main characters of their obligation to her.
Her key relationships are primarily with the members of the Hachisuka Express. She is a constant thorn in the side of Hajiki and Hachisuka, blaming them for her predicament and refusing to let them off the hook. Her relationship with Hachisuka takes an unexpected turn by the end of the series. After spending the entire story as a source of demands and complaints, she suddenly suggests that she would like to start seeing him romantically. This development is so alarming to Hachisuka that he immediately flees Night Town, closes his office, and attempts to escape. In a final display of her tenacious personality, Catherine chases after him on a bicycle.
Catherine undergoes little change in her overall objective, but her dynamic with others shifts from purely transactional to personally interested. Her notable abilities are not related to combat or special powers, as she never operates a Gad. Instead, her most significant skill is her unyielding persistence and her talent for making herself a nuisance until her demands are addressed. She is resourceful in trying to hire help and relentless in reminding others of her grievances, ensuring that her presence is continually felt despite her lack of a Gad.
