Description
"El-Hazard: The Wanderers" is a 26-episode anime series that blends fantasy, adventure, and comedy. The story centers on Makoto Mizuhara, a high school student who, along with his teacher Mr. Fujisawa and his rival Jinnai, is transported to the mysterious world of El-Hazard. This world is a fantastical realm filled with advanced technology, ancient civilizations, and powerful beings. The trio is separated upon arrival, with each character embarking on their own journey.
Makoto finds himself allied with Princess Rune Venus and the Bugrom, a race of insect-like creatures. He learns that El-Hazard is on the brink of war, with tensions rising between the human kingdom of Roshtaria and the Bugrom. Makoto’s knowledge of technology and his resourcefulness make him a key figure in navigating the conflicts and uncovering the secrets of El-Hazard. Meanwhile, Mr. Fujisawa becomes a revered figure due to his wisdom and is drawn into the political and spiritual affairs of the world.
Jinnai, driven by ambition and jealousy, aligns himself with the Bugrom Queen, Diva, and seeks to conquer El-Hazard. His cunning and manipulative nature make him a persistent antagonist throughout the series. The narrative explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the clash between tradition and progress as the characters navigate their roles in this unfamiliar world.
The series balances its overarching plot with episodic adventures, often incorporating humor and lighthearted moments. The interactions between the characters, particularly Makoto’s growing bond with Princess Rune and his rivalry with Jinnai, drive much of the story. The world of El-Hazard is richly detailed, with its unique cultures, technologies, and mythologies adding depth to the narrative. The series concludes with a resolution to the central conflicts, though it leaves room for further exploration of the world and its inhabitants.

1Drawn into the Land of Adventure
Shinonome High School students prepare for the annual school festival. Nanami Jinnai sells boxed lunches and later searches for Makoto Mizuhara, who works alone in the science laboratory on an experimental device. The student council confronts Katsuhiko Jinnai, Nanami's older brother and student council president, over questionable funding decisions and alleged document forgery. Jinnai defends his innocence but claims absolute authority over the council. Jinnai enters Makoto's laboratory and demands he halt the experiment, citing noise violations. When Makoto refuses, Jinnai threatens to permanently revoke all funding for the science club. The next day, Jinnai watches Makoto receive praise on television and recalls multiple childhood incidents where Makoto outperformed him. Jinnai decides to sabotage Makoto's reputation by planting girls' underwear in the laboratory to frame him as a thief. Late that night, teacher Masamichi Fujisawa conducts a security check around the school grounds. Makoto completes his experiment while Nanami and Fujisawa join him in the classroom. Jinnai enters the empty laboratory, throws undergarments around the room, but trips on wires while leaving and unintentionally tampers with the device. Makoto rushes in to stop him. A dimensional rift opens from the malfunctioning machine and envelops Makoto, Jinnai, Nanami, and Fujisawa. Makoto regains consciousness alone in an unfamiliar world, separated from the others and with no clear means of return.
2Exploring the Kingdom of Mystery
Makoto Mizuhara watches Princess Rune Venus flee from a Bugrom. Rune jumps into an abyss, and Makoto catches her below. Fujisawa encounters the pursuing Bugrom and unexpectedly develops combat abilities. He defeats the Bugrom after discovering his sake bottle is broken. Londs, the palace watch commander, arrives with guards. Londs escorts Makoto, Fujisawa, and Rune aboard an airship. The group travels to the capital city of Florestica. Londs suspects the newcomers are Bugrom spies. Princess Rune defends Makoto and Fujisawa, insisting on their innocence. Doctor Schtalubaugh conducts an investigation into the two strangers. Makoto accidentally places his hand on a strange orb in the palace. The orb begins to glow upon his touch. Those present recognize the illumination as the Sign of the King, marking Makoto with an ancient and significant power. This activation draws immediate attention from the palace authorities and sets up conflicts over Makoto's role in El-Hazard.
3The Phantom of the Ruins
Makoto and his companions enter the ancient ruins of the Phantom Tribe to search for a weapon against the Bugrom. Jinnai trails them, intending to seize any power for his own ambitions. Inside, a pressure plate triggers a giant stone golem that attacks the group. Makoto uses the wind from his bracelet to deflect the golem’s strikes, but the creature’s relentless assault separates Nanami from the others. Nanami falls through a crumbling floor into an underground chamber where she meets a young woman dressed in white robes. The woman introduces herself as Fatora and states she is the last survivor of the Phantom Tribe. Above, Jinnai reveals himself and takes control of the golem by tampering with its control crystal, turning it against Makoto. Fatora leads Nanami to a hidden control room and activates a device that shuts down the golem. She then explains that the Phantom Tribe’s technology, including the Eye of God, can stop the Bugrom but requires a specific key. Makoto recognizes that the Eye of God is the same power he needs to return to his world. Fatora decides to join the group, while Jinnai flees to the Bugrom queen with information about the ruins.
4The Lonely Priestess
Rune Venus informs Makoto Mizuhara that three priestesses outside the Roshtaria empire each control a fundamental power of nature. Their combined abilities might create a path for Makoto and Masamichi Fujisawa to return to their own world. Katsuhiko Jinnai also pursues the priestesses' secrets,a quest Queen Diva considers dangerously reckless. Doctor Schtalubaugh assigns the court lady Alielle to accompany Makoto and Fujisawa as their guide. The group traverses deserts and gorges while evading traps set by Jinnai. They reach the water shrine where the priestess Miz resides. Miz lives in isolation and, upon first sight, becomes infatuated with Fujisawa. She confesses she can reveal her secrets only if Fujisawa spends a romantic day with her, a fabricated condition to end her solitude. Fujisawa participates in the day’s activities with growing enthusiasm until Miz admits the deception. Instead of anger, Fujisawa expresses gratitude for the experience. Having obtained Miz’s cooperation, the group now sets its sights on locating the two remaining priestesses.
5The Shrine of Wind
Makoto,Alielle, and Fujisawa arrive at the Shrine of Wind, seeking information to return home. The shrine’s priestess, Afura Mann, initially mistakes them for construction workers hired for an expansion project. When the travelers request access to her library, she refuses, citing sacred rules that restrict entry to shrine personnel. Makoto offers to complete the construction work in exchange for library access, and Afura Mann accepts. Fujisawa begins construction but becomes intoxicated on alcohol stored at the shrine and builds a log cabin instead of the planned library addition. Afura Mann berates the group for the unusable structure and orders them to leave, but Makoto convinces her to allow him to rebuild alone. Makoto works through the night, redesigning the plans and laying a foundation according to his own modifications. Afura Mann remains critical of his changes until she observes his dedication and the quality of the completed work. While Makoto and Alielle travel to town for finishing supplies, three thieves ambush them. Makoto distracts the thieves and escapes using a windmill blade as a hang glider. Afura Mann arrives, uses her wind-controlling power to defeat the thieves, and retrieves Makoto. With the library completed and organized, the group searches through Afura Mann’s collection but finds no information on returning to their world. They depart the shrine with their central goal unfulfilled, now forced to continue their journey to the next shrine.
6Miz's Fiance
The travelers stop at a village where Miz reunites with her childhood friend Rune,a young man to whom her family had formally betrothed her. Rune immediately challenges the group’s presence, particularly Makoto, whom he views as a rival. Fatora exacerbates the tension by deliberately implying Makoto and Miz share a romantic bond. Miz herself struggles to explain her current situation without revealing her true identity as a princess. Rune insists on honoring the engagement and demands Miz stay in the village. The Bugrom launch a sudden attack, and Rune attempts to lead the defense but proves ineffective. Makoto uses his Eye of God to disable the Bugrom forces, saving the villagers. Rune witnesses the power Makoto commands and the trust Miz places in him. After the battle, Rune formally releases Miz from the engagement, acknowledging her path lies elsewhere. Miz remains conflicted, torn between gratitude toward Rune and her growing dependence on Makoto. Fatora observes Miz’s hesitation and intensifies her own efforts to win Makoto’s attention, setting up a clearer rivalry between the two women.
7A Golden Opportunity
Makoto Mizuhara and his companions discover a hidden treasure map that promises untold riches somewhere in the vast desert of El-Hazard. The group, including Alielle, Fujisawa, and Ifurita, sets out across the punishing desert landscape to locate the treasure. During their journey, they encounter a small oasis where a peculiar creature named Parnassus appears, claiming to be the desert's guardian. Parnassus challenges the group to solve a series of whimsical riddles before allowing them to continue. After passing the tests, the adventurers press deeper into the desert, facing furious sandstorms and treacherous pitfalls that threaten to end their expedition. The group eventually encounters the Motavia Clan, a nomadic tribe possessing extensive knowledge of the desert's secrets and legends. The tribe's allegiance remains uncertain, forcing the adventurers to navigate carefully between trust and potential betrayal. The treasure hunt forces each character to confront personal limitations while relying on their companions' strengths to survive the harsh environment. By the episode's end, the group has gained crucial information about the treasure's location but remains at the mercy of the Motavia Clan's unpredictable intentions.
8Reunion
Miz marches through the entire night to reach Fujisawa. At dawn, she reunites with him in Roshtaria. Rune Venus converses happily with her dragon about Makoto’s return and makes Miz her attendant. Fujisawa and Miz spend a romantic morning together at a wishing well. The water in the well and throughout Roshtaria suddenly stops flowing. Miz races back to the Water Shrine, with Fujisawa and Makoto following. Nanami has converted the Water Shrine into a bath and amusement park, consuming the city’s water supply. Miz confronts Nanami and her servants over the diversion. The overloaded shrine machines break down, leaving the building in ruins. The collapse forces Nanami and Makoto to confront each other directly. Meanwhile, Jinnai continues to scheme against Roshtaria and moves to awaken the destructive entity Ifurita.
9House of Thieves
Makoto struggles to find his purpose among the Earth people who have all established new roles in Roshtaria. He attempts to impress Schtalabaugh with a scientific demonstration that ends explosively, then fails to keep pace with Nanami's vegetable preparation in the kitchen. A sudden vegetable shortage creates a crisis when a single bundle costs 20,000 Roshtals. Guards discover a path leading to a Bugrom hive where Katsuhiko Jinnai sits atop a massive pile of vegetables. Jinnai claims he grew the crops, but Nanami accuses him of theft. Without proof, the group leaves, though Jinnai secretly orchestrates the starvation of the Alliance by stripping the fields. Makoto devises a test using a plant's natural ability to absorb colored water through its roots. He throws a red vegetable at Jinnai, who insists all his vegetables are white, exposing the theft when the vegetable appears red. Enraged, Jinnai sends Bugrom soldiers after Makoto. Masamichi Fujisawa fights them off while Nanami starts a food fight that forces Jinnai to retreat and abandon the stolen harvest. With the vegetables returned to the kingdom, daily life resumes. A gust of wind opens Makoto's book to the page where he drew Rune Venus's portrait, leaving him embarrassed as she notices.
10Episode 10
Fujisawa and Nanami enter the Phantom Tribe’s floating fortress to locate Diva. Mizuhara stays behind with the Bugrom army, coordinating the diversionary attack. Inside the fortress, Fujisawa separates from Nanami to search alone. He discovers Diva held in a crystalline prison that drains her energy. Nanami encounters a Phantom Tribe warrior who questions her loyalty to the humans. Diva refuses Fujisawa’s initial rescue attempt because breaking the crystal would release energy that kills everyone nearby. Mizuhara launches the Bugrom assault earlier than planned, drawing the fortress’s defenders away. Fujisawa convinces Diva to accept the risk by promising to contain the blast with his own body. The crystal shatters, unleashing a surge that incapacitates Fujisawa and alerts the entire fortress. Nanami reaches them as guards close in, and she temporarily holds them back using her wind powers. Diva, weakened but free, stabilizes Fujisawa with a healing spell. The three escape into the fortress’s lower levels while Mizuhara’s forces retreat under heavy counterattack. The Phantom Tribe leader, aware of the escape, orders the fortress to submerge and pursue the fugitives directly.
11Episode 11
In the aftermath of the previous battle,Makoto Mizuhara and his companions remain separated within the palace. Fujisawa confronts the priestess Shayla-Shayla, who struggles to control her inner phantom due to the emotional strain of being near him. Nanami Jinnai and her brother Katsuhiko Jinnai continue their own maneuvering, with Katsuhiko attempting to seize control of the Bugrom forces through his alliance with the mysterious demon god. Shayla-Shayla’s unstable condition forces Fujisawa to make a direct appeal, grounding her with an uncharacteristically earnest confession that briefly restores her composure. Meanwhile, Makoto encounters the Phantom Tribe’s leader, who reveals the true nature of the supernatural disturbances affecting the kingdom. The demon god’s power grows more visible, manifesting as a massive barrier that cuts off key sections of the capital. Mizuhara realizes that the conflicts among the human leaders have left the city vulnerable to external manipulation. Princess Rune Venus, observing the mounting chaos, orders a strategic withdrawal to preserve what forces remain loyal. The episode ends with the heroes scattered and the demon god’s barrier closing in, leaving the capital’s fate hanging on a single, desperate countermove.
12Tomb of the Demon God
A legend states that once every century,a sealed castle containing an ancient weapon appears in the sky. Princess Rune Venus decides to travel to this castle and renew its seal before the weapon can be released. She possesses the key necessary for the ritual. Makoto Mizuhara, Nanami Jinnai, Ura, Londs, and Alielle accompany her on the journey. Katsuhiko Jinnai learns of the weapon and follows the group to claim its power for himself. Rune and her party reach the floating castle first despite Jinnai's attempts to interfere. Makoto discovers that the castle in the sky is only a mirage created by extreme heat, and the true location lies elsewhere. Rune and Makoto insert the key into the lock, which does not renew the seal but instead frees the weapon. The released entity is Ifurita, a female-looking being similar to a wind-up doll. Ifurita immediately embraces Makoto. Jinnai arrives on the scene and declares that Ifurita belongs to him, setting up a direct confrontation over control of the ancient weapon.
13The Final Battle
The allied forces of El-Hazard launch a direct assault on the Phantom Tribe’s floating fortress. Makoto uses his Eye of God abilities to deactivate the fortress’s defensive barriers, allowing the combined armies to breach its outer walls. Princess Rune Venus leads the cavalry charge, coordinating with Nanami and Jinnai’s forces to divide the enemy’s attention. Inside the fortress, Makoto confronts Diva, the leader of the Phantom Tribe. Diva attempts to persuade Makoto to join her cause, revealing her belief that using the Eye of God’s full power will reset the world to a pure state. Makoto refuses and restrains his power, causing the fortress’s core to destabilize. The resulting explosion destroys the fortress, but Diva escapes through a dimensional rift. The allied forces suffer heavy casualties, and the victory feels incomplete without Diva’s capture. As the group regroups, the Phantom Tribe’s remnants retreat to their hidden sanctuary, setting the stage for a final confrontation.
14The Legendary Snowfields
15Tale of the Priestess
Shayla Shayla recounts her past to the group. She describes her early life working for little money and her time at the priest school, where she earned a reputation as a feared fighter. Her encounter with the Fire Priest Crana Crana inspired her to pursue the path of a high priest. The narrative then shifts to Afura Mann, who provides her own perspective on their shared history at the school. Afura and Shayla developed a bitter rivalry marked by mutual animosity and several unresolved fights. Despite their conflicts, both rose through the ranks. Afura ultimately became the Priest of Wind, while Shayla succeeded Crana Crana as the Fire Priest. The episode details the parallel paths the two women took, highlighting the personal struggles each overcame. Their competitive relationship, forged in the priest school, solidified into a tense but enduring connection. Following their stories, the group gains a deeper understanding of the history between the two powerful priestesses. The episode concludes with the party resolving to continue their journey with new insight into their companions' pasts.
16Whirlwind
Jinnai orders Ifurita to conduct training exercises with her annihilation powers. During the training,Ifurita generates a massive whirlwind that threatens the city of Roshtaria. The citizens panic as the unnatural storm grows. Afura Mann resolves to enter the whirlwind to understand its origin. She pushes through the turbulent winds and glimpses Ifurita at the center but is struck by debris and knocked unconscious. Makoto and Nanami find Afura after she falls to the ground. Once Afura regains consciousness, she and Nanami discuss the situation and devise a new approach. Afura ventures into the whirlwind again, this time listening for the voice within the wind. She reaches the center and finds Ifurita crying alone. Afura helps Ifurita regain control, and the two work together to disperse the whirlwind. Jinnai later reprimands Ifurita for cooperating with an enemy, though the training exercise caused no lasting destruction. Ifurita’s emotional instability and Jinnai’s increasing frustration set the stage for further confrontations over her loyalty.
17The Eye of God
Makoto examines ancient writings and discovers that the moon orbiting Roshtaria is an artificial satellite called the Eye of God. Princess Rune reveals that her parents sent her there as a small child. She later shares this memory with Makoto, deepening their conversation about the satellite’s purpose. Access to the Eye of God requires two hearts to meet a holy contract, a condition that draws them together. Curiosity drives them to seek entry to a high-security bunker that normally admits only members of the royal family. Inside, they find that Makoto also can pass the barriers, which surprises them both. They reach a central chamber containing a transmitter that activates upon their presence. Rune acknowledges her growing honest affection for Makoto as the carrier process begins. The device transports them both to the Eye of God, leaving their companions behind without warning. The activation of the satellite sets the stage for new revelations about its true function and the role it expects Makoto and Rune to fulfill.
18Operation: Abduction
Katsuhiko Jinnai devises a scheme to abduct Rune Venus during her state visit to a friendly kingdom. He secures Ifurita’s assistance for the operation, using a suitcase of money to convince his committee of his suitability for the task. Ifurita initiates the attack with several destructive flashes at the palace, creating widespread chaos. While Makoto attempts to protect Rune Venus, Jinnai simultaneously executes his own preparations. He deploys Bugrom forces to put the palace gate guards to sleep and infiltrate the building. In the ensuing confusion, Jinnai seizes Rune Venus, though Ifurita’s excessive fireworks nearly jeopardizes the mission. Jinnai escapes the chaos, inadvertently abducting his own sister, Nanami, alongside Ifurita and Rune Venus. He loads both captives into a Gleiter and departs, leaving Makoto behind in despair as he witnesses the successful kidnapping. The episode closes with Makoto facing the immediate crisis of Rune Venus’s capture and Jinnai’s escape, setting up his desperate pursuit to recover her.
19Hive of Darkness
20Episode 20
21A Love in Peril
Makoto and his group set out to cross the Great Saint River to reach Bugrom territory and rescue Rune Venus and Nanami Jinnai. Afura Mann refuses to join the crossing because the three priestesses swore a holy oath not to traverse the river. Shayla-Shayla,Makoto, Masamichi Fujisawa, Miz Mishtal, Alielle, and Ura depart without her aboard a Gleiter. The river proves treacherous: a whirlpool nearly pulls them under until Miz parts the waters to create a path. A dense, freezing fog forces the group to navigate blindly. Alielle returns to piloting after an iceberg collision that Fujisawa prevents from throwing her overboard. Shayla-Shayla destroys a second iceberg with a fire blast to clear the way. Bugrom forces attack the Gleiter mid-crossing, complicating their advance. When a Bugrom strikes Shayla-Shayla, Makoto shields her and gets knocked off the vessel. Shayla-Shayla dives into the water after Makoto, but the cold renders her unconscious after pulling him to the surface. Makoto revives her, and upon waking she mistakes his attempt to help for an attempted kiss, slapping him in response. The group successfully lands on the far bank, bringing them within striking distance of the Bugrom palace. The episode closes with Jinnai receiving word of their arrival, setting the stage for a direct confrontation inside his stronghold.
22A Death-Defying Rescue
Makoto and his group arrive in Bugrom territory and move toward Jinnai's castle under constant attack from the Bugrom forces. Afura separates from the group to follow a different course of action, leaving Makoto, Shayla, and Ura to continue on foot. The trio commandeers a Bugrom glider by chance and flies toward the castle until enemy forces detect them. The alarm forces Nanami to flee her captivity. Shayla engages Ifurita in combat while Makoto races to the roof, where Jinnai has set a trap. Jinnai ties Rune Venus to a glider and uses her as bait for Makoto. The trap fails as chaos erupts across the castle. Rune flies away on the glider against her will, and Makoto falls from the tower, losing consciousness. Shayla and Ifurita continue fighting, causing extensive damage to the castle. The remaining members of the group arrive but the Bugrom forces surround them. Afura appears at the last moment and rescues everyone from the encirclement. The rescue succeeds, but the group remains stranded in hostile territory with Jinnai and Ifurita still active.
23Escape
Rune Venus and Nanami Jinnai flee from the Bugrom forces and become lost within Bugrom territory. Makoto Mizuhara orders Afura Mann to locate and rescue them. The two girls begin a multi-day journey across the country, evading pursuers. On several occasions, the Bugrom nearly capture them. Chico, a friendly Bugrom, provides assistance during one close escape. During the flight, Nanami tells Rune about Makoto and discovers that Rune loves him. The pair reaches the banks of the holy river, but the Bugrom corner them there. Afura arrives at the final moment and rescues them both from capture. The successful retrieval reunites the group, yet the Bugrom threat remains active. The episode sets up a direct confrontation with the Bugrom forces in the next stage of the conflict.
24Destiny
Makoto Mizuhara and his companions enter the central chamber of the Eye of God. The ancient mechanism awakens and locks onto Makoto, confirming his role as the key to its power. Jinnai and the Bugrom breach the outer defenses, forcing the group to divide: Nanami and Fujisawa work to stabilize the core while Ifurita holds back the attacking swarm. Princess Rune Venus confronts the leader of the Phantom Tribe, who discloses that activating the Eye will either save El-Hazard or unravel it entirely based on Makoto’s choice. Makoto hesitates, caught between the chance to return to his own world and the risk of destroying El-Hazard. Jinnai pushes past the defenders and attempts to seize control of the Eye, causing an energy surge that accelerates the activation sequence. The Phantom Tribe leader launches a final assault to claim the artifact for herself, forcing Makoto to act. Makoto redirects the Eye’s energy away from his own escape, instead channeling it to seal the Phantom Tribe’s power. The Eye reaches full activation, and its energies begin distorting the landscape of El-Hazard. Makoto vanishes into the blinding light as his friends shout after him, leaving his fate uncertain and the world on the verge of transformation.
25The End of the World
Ifurita, the key to the Eye of God, initiates its world-ending function, overriding Jinnai's control and alarming him as he faces the destruction of the realm he seeks to rule. Rune Venus, Afura Mann, and Nanami arrive at the device. Makoto and Rune teleport to the Eye of God to confront Ifurita directly. They attempt to dissuade her, but she refuses to deviate from her programmed directive to annihilate the world. Ifurita hesitates only when she recognizes Makoto and Rune as descendants of her creators. Despite her pause, the Eye of God surpasses its critical threshold, making the planet's destruction imminent. Makoto discovers a final, untested emergency measure within the system. Activating this failsafe will stop the Eye of God but result in his own disappearance. The immediate consequence places Makoto in a position where saving El-Hazard requires his personal sacrifice.
26The Wanderers
Makoto and his companions confront the final collapse of the Phantom Tribe’s dimensional barrier. Fujisawa triggers the dismantling of the key device inside the shrine, forcing the floating island to descend. The Phantom Tribe leader, Diva, orders her forces to abandon the structure as it crumbles. Makoto uses his fire powers to shield the group from falling debris while Katsuhiko and Nanami evacuate the remaining civilians. Shayla-Shayla channels her remaining magical energy to stabilize the escape route, leaving her weakened. Diva confronts Mizuhara directly, demanding an explanation for his betrayal of her plan to rewrite history. Mizuhara admits he chose to preserve the present world rather than let her erase the conflicts that defined their lives. The barrier fully collapses, and the island settles onto the desert below, ending the threat of dimensional fusion. In the aftermath, the Phantom Tribe vanishes into the restored natural landscape, and Diva departs without further hostility. The group returns to the palace, where the princesses officially recognize the Earth visitors as free citizens of El-Hazard. Makoto, Katsuhiko, Nanami, and Fujisawa prepare to return to their own world through the stabilized gate. Shayla-Shayla and Mizuhara share a final moment of acknowledgment before the gate activates. The four step through, leaving behind the relationships and battles that defined their stay. The final shot shows the gate closing as the characters on both sides accept the permanence of their separation.
