Description
Nanami Jinnai is a central character in the anime El-Hazard: The Wanderers. She is the younger sister of Katsuhiko Jinnai, separated by about a year in age, and a fellow student at Shinonome High School. On Earth, Nanami demonstrates a highly independent and entrepreneurial nature. She is known to hold multiple part-time jobs and once accepted payment from the school’s Broadcast Club to publicly question her brother about fraudulent election results during his campaign for student body president.

Nanami is transported to the world of El-Hazard alongside her brother, Makoto Mizuhara, and their teacher Masamichi Fujisawa after a machine created by Makoto malfunctions. In the Wanderers timeline, she initially lands alone and must fend for herself. She secures work as a waitress at an oasis city and later starts a small business selling boxed lunches to visiting priestesses at the Fountain of Arliman. Eventually, she reunites with Makoto and Fujisawa and joins their journey.

Personality-wise, Nanami often behaves with a mature, practical demeanor, but she can also express a more childish side through snide remarks and insults. She is highly self-reliant and resourceful, with a strong focus on earning money, though this stems more from a drive to work than from greed. She is not afraid to criticize her brother openly, and their relationship is marked by frequent arguments and a mutual lack of respect, yet they retain a complicated sibling bond. Nanami holds romantic feelings for Makoto Mizuhara, but she never has a clear opportunity to discuss them. This unrequited affection leads to a running rivalry with the priestess Shayla-Shayla over Makoto’s attention.

Over the course of the series, Nanami forms key relationships with several characters. She becomes close friends with Princess Rune Venus of Roshtaria. She also develops a strong attachment to Alielle Relryle, who describes them as “special friends” in the final episode, a relationship that carries a hint of homoerotic subtext but is generally portrayed as a big-sisterly dynamic. Nanami’s primary role in the story is as a grounded, resourceful member of the group, often contributing her practical skills and business acumen. Her development involves learning to rely on others and asserting her own independence within the strange world.

Nanami’s notable ability gained upon entering El-Hazard differs between timelines. In the original OVA series, she receives the power to see through illusions created by the Phantom Tribe, making her a critical defense against that threat. In The Wanderers, where the Phantom Tribe does not exist, her ability instead matches her brother’s: she can communicate with the Bugrom, the insectoid race that Jinnai commands. Beyond these supernatural gifts, Nanami possesses sharp observational skills and a talent for cooking and business management, which she puts to practical use throughout her adventures.
