Description
In the world of El-Hazard, the Bugrom are a race of giant, intelligent insectoid creatures who serve as a primary antagonistic force. They reside in a sprawling hive-like homeland located across the Holy River of God, which divides the continent and separates their territory from the human nations. The heart of their domain is a distinctive, massive mushroom-shaped structure that functions as the Queen’s palace and the center of their society. For much of the story in The Wanderers, this homeland remains intact and serves as the base of operations for their schemes.

The Bugrom are defined by their rigid social structure, being an entirely hive-minded race that answers to a single, supreme leader: Queen Diva. Unlike her subjects, who are monstrous in form, Queen Diva has a strikingly humanoid and beautiful appearance, which adds to her enigmatic and commanding presence over her subjects. The Bugrom are driven by a collective ambition for expansion and conquest, believing it is their destiny to rule all of El-Hazard. For a long time, their aggression was held in check solely by the threat of the Eye of God, a colossal superweapon controlled by the human kingdom of Roshtaria.

Their role in the story becomes significantly more active with the arrival of Katsuhiko Jinnai, a human student council president who is transported from Earth. Jinnai possesses the unique and crucial ability to understand and speak the Bugrom language, a skill no other human has. Queen Diva interprets this as a sign from a prophecy, declaring Jinnai to be the holy messiah destined to lead her people to victory. Consequently, Jinnai becomes the Bugrom’s military commander, forming a deeply symbiotic and often comically villainous partnership with Queen Diva. While Jinnai provides strategic cunning and a fanatical drive to conquer, the Bugrom provide him with a loyal, obedient army to command, fulfilling his megalomaniacal desires for power. The relationship is portrayed as mutually beneficial; Jinnai even gives individual names, often with humorous references, to specific Bugrom soldiers, suggesting a degree of paternalistic care for his insectoid troops.

The Bugrom themselves come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, though specific individuals are rarely distinguished from the masses. They are fiercely loyal to their queen and, by extension, to Jinnai, whom they follow into battle against the human alliance. Their primary motivation is the expansion of their empire, and they serve as the main physical threat and obstacle that the protagonists must contend with throughout the series. Their notable abilities stem from their insectoid nature: they are hardy, numerous, and well-organized, capable of construction, warfare, and marching in orderly formations from their hive. They also possess a unique language that, to human ears, sounds like garbled speech, and which only Jinnai can interpret. While they are a resilient and dangerous force, their development is largely collective rather than individual, focused on their changing fortunes in the war and their unwavering loyalty to their leaders.
