Description
Jodie Summer serves as a supporting protagonist in the anime F-Zero Falcon Densetsu, where she is the captain of the Mobile Task Force. Her background is rooted in a career as a top combat pilot for the Galactic Space Federation, and she is highly regarded by her peers and superiors for her abilities, later being chosen as a spokesperson for the Federation. She pilots a machine known as the White Cat, a name derived from a nickname given to her by her father, Mason Summer, the inventor of the G-Diffusor anti-gravity system. Tragedy struck when her father died in a ship crash, which resolved her to race in the F-Zero Grand Prix in his honor.
Jodie is described as having a stoic, fearless, and strict personality, a demeanor that comes with her leadership role. She does not tolerate failure or nonsense from her team members, which can make her appear somewhat cold and domineering. Despite this serious exterior, she is compassionate, kind, and possesses a good judge of character. She genuinely cares for her fellow Task Force members, even if she pushes some of them, like Ryu Suzaku, quite hard. She also displays a more vulnerable side, such as laments over the loss of her brother and a notable sensitivity about her age, once losing control of her machine when called an "old lady". While she can become frustrated when her orders are ignored, her judgment is generally sound, and she is a good judge of character.
Her primary motivation is her duty to stop the criminal organization Dark Million. This mission is deeply personal, rooted in a traumatic incident that occurred three years before the main story. During a confrontation with the criminal Zoda, Jodie was caught off guard by a rocket launcher. Her older brother, Andy, who had raised her after their parents died, dove in front of her to shield her from the blast. Andy was seemingly killed in the explosion, while Jodie sustained grievous injuries that required half of her body to be replaced with internal cybernetics, a procedure performed by Dr. Stewart. This event led to her promotion to captain of the Mobile Task Force, a unit dedicated to stopping Dark Million, and is the reason she is a partial cyborg. Jodie had always looked up to her brother and joined the Galaxy Police to follow in his footsteps, unaware that he had become the legendary bounty hunter and F-Zero pilot known as Captain Falcon.
As the captain of the Mobile Task Force, Jodie is responsible for leading her team against Black Shadow and his organization. She is the one who called for Ryu Suzaku's revival from coldsleep, inducting him into the Task Force to help in their fight. Her key relationships are central to the story. Her bond with her brother, Andy Summer, is the most significant. The revelation that Captain Falcon is her missing brother is a pivotal emotional arc for her. She mourns for him after his final battle but ultimately feels great honor in being the sibling of such a hero. She also developed a motherly fondness for the young mechanic Clank Hughes. Furthermore, before the events of the series, she encountered a young street thug named The Shinigami, who later reformed his life and became a member of the Task Force, Jack Levin, largely due to her influence.
Throughout the series, Jodie develops from a grief-stricken and duty-bound officer into a character who must confront her past to move forward. She is initially plagued by thoughts of her brother and the incident that nearly killed her. After discovering that Captain Falcon is Andy, she is forced to reckon with his decision to live a separate life and his ultimate sacrifice. In the end, she comes to accept his death, mourning him while feeling a sense of honor. In the series epilogue, she appears at the start of a new Grand Prix alongside Ryu Suzaku, who takes her brother's place as the new Captain Falcon.
As an F-Zero pilot, Jodie possesses an incredible ability to control speed, a skill that makes her the target of many rivals despite her relative inexperience in the racing circuit. In addition to her piloting skills, her cybernetic enhancements are a notable part of her physical being, though the full extent of her abilities from this reconstruction is not extensively detailed. As a leader and former Galaxy Police officer, she is also a competent strategist and combatant.
