Description
Crux is a minor character in Final Fantasy: Unlimited. She is a fairy marionette brought to life by the enigmatic figure Oscha. Her appearance is that of a small, winged girl, often seen wearing a helmet and armor, with yellow eyes and purple hair. Her entire vocabulary consists solely of the single phrase "kukuruyu," though the other characters, particularly the Lords of Gaudium, appear to understand her meaning through context and intonation.

Created for the express purpose of espionage, Crux's primary motivation is to serve her master Oscha. Her role in the story begins in the second episode, where Oscha animates the marionette, gives her the name Crux, and dispatches her to spy on the protagonists Kaze, the twins Yu and Ai Hayakawa, and their companion Lisa. She is often seen flying overhead, silently observing the group and relaying information back to Oscha or the other Gaudium Lords, serving as a herald of their presence. The Gaudium Lords generally treat her not as a valued helper but as a disposable tool, a reflection of her initial standing within the villainous hierarchy.

Her key relationships evolve significantly over the course of the series. While most Lords disregard her, the swordsman Makenshi treats her differently, and she gradually develops strong feelings for him. This emotional connection becomes the driving force for her most significant actions. As her attachment to Makenshi grows, she begins to deviate from her original orders, choosing to assist him instead of simply spying on the protagonists. In one notable instance, she spreads a black mold through the domain of the Lord Fungus, directly enabling Kaze to destroy him.

Crux's development culminates in the series' climax. She is visibly shaken when Makenshi is impaled on his own sword. Although she initially follows Oscha's orders to dump the mist and Soil of both Makenshi and Kaze into the entity Chaos, she ultimately betrays her former masters. She secretly holds back a single mist bottle, which she later presents to the wounded Makenshi. Following the final battle, Crux carries the injured Makenshi away and tends to his wounds, later becoming his traveling companion. In a further display of her loyalty and transformed role, Crux is later able to transform into the Cross Sword, a secondary weapon for Makenshi, after receiving a gem containing the power of his late brother, Madoushi. The name Crux is Latin for "cross," a reference to the Southern Cross constellation, which complements Makenshi's sword-based abilities.
