Description
"Sakura Taisen: Le Nouveau Paris" is a 12-episode anime series set in an alternate 1920s Paris, blending steampunk aesthetics with supernatural elements. The story revolves around the Paris Combat Revue, a group of young women who serve as both performers at the Grand Palais theater and defenders of the city against demonic threats. These women pilot steam-powered mechs called "Strikers" to combat the forces of darkness, which are led by a mysterious organization known as the Black Sanctum.
The protagonist, Erika Fontaine, is a spirited and determined member of the Paris Combat Revue. Alongside her teammates—Glycine Bleumer, Lobelia Carlini, Coquelicot, and Hanabi Kitaoji—Erika balances her duties as a performer and a warrior. Each character brings unique skills and personalities to the group, with Glycine serving as the calm and composed leader, Lobelia as the aloof and enigmatic sharpshooter, Coquelicot as the cheerful and energetic mechanic, and Hanabi as the disciplined and traditional newcomer from Japan.
The narrative begins with the Paris Combat Revue facing internal and external challenges. The Black Sanctum intensifies its attacks, targeting the city’s spiritual energy sources. As the team investigates these incidents, they uncover a deeper conspiracy involving ancient artifacts and the true nature of their enemies. The series explores themes of camaraderie, sacrifice, and the struggle to protect a city teetering on the brink of chaos.
Throughout the series, the characters’ relationships and personal growth are central to the plot. Erika’s unwavering optimism and determination inspire her teammates, while Glycine’s leadership is tested as she grapples with the weight of responsibility. Lobelia’s mysterious past is gradually revealed, adding depth to her character, and Coquelicot’s technical expertise proves vital in overcoming the Black Sanctum’s advanced technology. Hanabi’s integration into the team highlights cultural contrasts and the importance of unity.
The climax of the series sees the Paris Combat Revue confronting the Black Sanctum in a final battle to save Paris. The resolution ties together the personal arcs of the characters while leaving room for future developments. The series combines action, drama, and moments of lightheartedness, creating a balanced narrative that appeals to fans of mecha and historical fantasy genres.
